Famous American Civil War General Thomas Jonathan 'Stonewall' Jackson's family forebears came from the Birches / Tartaraghhan area of County Armagh, near the shores of Lough Neagh. A memorial to Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson is erected at the Birches. On the shores of Lough Neagh, Maghery Country Park boasts 5 km of woodland walks and picnic areas in natural surroundings. This is an excellent area for birdwatching, fishing and walking. Lying 1 km off the shores of Maghery Country Park, Coney Island has a rich history, with evidence of human occupation dating back to 8000 years BC. The island is owned by the National Trust and regular boat trips on the Trostan are available at the weekend from Maghery Country Park.
