Castello Di Velona, Montalcino - Hotel Description

High on a gentle hillock overlooking the peaceful Val d’ Orcia and the distant 5,700 ft. Summit of Tuscany’s highest mountain peak, Mt. Amiata, is the breathtaking site of the newly reconstructed luxury boutique hotel, Castello di Velona. A 10th century fortress and once the villa of famous Sienese families, the Castello di Velona opens its portals to the public following a $ 16 million renovation project. History blends with art, viniculture and gastronomy at this intimate luxury hotel.

Until four years ago the castle was largely in ruins until the famed architect Alberto Durante transformed it into a modern hotel preserving its original features, including its imposing XII century watchtower, while providing every comfort for today’s sophisticated travellers. Interestingly, the castle’s existence appears on old maps painted by Ignazio Danti and preserved in the Vatican Museum, a copy of which is exhibited in the castle’s library.
