The George Hotel, Dorchester on Thames - Reviews & Ratings"The stay itself was fantastic. We loved the George. The only downside was the check-in, for which I have downgraded the overall experience from "excellent" to "good". The manager, who worked with her husband in running the hotel, was absolutely wonderful." (107316493)
Especially considering the age of the hotel, the room was in outstanding condition. Everything was great, really comfy bed and good shower AND tub! Nice and clean. The breakfast was very tasty and the manager was pleasant, capable and most accommodating, despite confusion at check-in.
Despite having a printed confirmation in hand for our stay at the George, our reservation had not been received by the manager from the online booking company, creating stress for us - we were hiking, and in no way able to seek alternate accommodation in another town at the end of the day. Luckily, there was a room. If there had not been a room, I don't really know what we would have done - there is apparently nowhere else to stay in Dorchester. This was the only place that I made a reservation where I was unable to have direct email contact with the management/owners at the time of booking. Perhaps an opportunity for customers to confirm personally with them would eliminate this kind of mix-up in the future. By having direct contact, I was able to confirm via email shortly before we left with all our accommodations that we were coming (seeing as the reservations had been made months previously), and which night - all except the George. By the way, I have made many online bookings before without incident.

The George Hotel, Dorchester on Thames - Reviews & Ratings"Only out of necessity did we stay here. Will never return and urge people to avoid staying here also." (107377792)
The young man on reception, was polite and attentive. Good quality food & breakfast. Friendly staff.
Between active hotels and the George hotel-one of the parties failed to secure the booking. Although we booked over a month in advance some double booking occurred and we were almost left without a room, for our 2 night stay for a wedding in Oxford. We were almost stranded. However rooms were sorted out for us-very touch and go. For this we were grateful-but this shouldn't have happened in the first place-we also had to sort the dilemma whilst on our journey down. This was the case for 3 separte couples also on the same day. Rooms were very dusty felt very unclean, shower pre dated 1912 and feebly trickled out, chipped bath and the main light failed to work. Therefore enquiring upon this we were then informed the main electric supply had been cut off to this room because that switch was too dangerous and in fact the room we stayed in was never intended to be used. Run down place-SEEK ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!!!!!

The George Hotel, Dorchester on Thames - Reviews & Ratings"We really liked the hotel but as guests we wished we had been offered the choice of having our evening meal in the lovely breakfast room, which we did not know existed till the morning, instead of the bar. Overall, a pleasant stay, and we felt we made a good choice and would certainly return." (107150465)
Character of building, quietness and beauty of location, parking on site, friendliness of staff, beautiful breakfast room.
Menu very limited, due, we understand to imminent change of management, and the evening meal produced (lasagne) was of poor quality, seemed to have been overdone in a microwave. It is not possible to open the window in bedroom (we were in room 2) and this was very unsatisfactory, and we would certainly enquire about this before making a future booking. A telephone number on the website would be appreciated.

The George Hotel, Dorchester on Thames - Reviews & Ratings"The hotel just needs a few more details to take from an average hotel, to a good stay." (97762851)
Just a few xtras would have improved the Hotel. Dining area had hanging parts of curtains, a few more details at breakfast, perhaps there was a staffing problem.

The George Hotel, Dorchester on Thames - Reviews & Ratings"Room nicely furnished with good quality furnishings - historic building with lost of character. Real wood fire in bar. Staff very pleasant and helpful. Have paid much more for less pleasant and comfortable Bed and Breakfast - would recommend The George for business travel or leisure." (97783714)

The George Hotel, Dorchester on Thames - Reviews & Ratings"It would have been handy to know that you had to pay an extra £5.50 per head for an English Breakfast. The continental breakfast really was not up to scratch. It consisted of two types of cheap cheese, toast, cereals and very little else." (97629474)
The old fashioned, coaching type inn experience of the place.
The Bar was completely empty all evening (on a Saturday Night). We were advised to eat else where, and not having any custom in a local bar gave the impression that the bar was not a good place to socialise.

The George Hotel, Dorchester on Thames - Reviews & Ratings"This is a lovely place to stay. Eating in the hotel is flexible and we appreciated it was possible to have a meal after 9.00pm. Unusual for outside London." (97098423)
Lovely room, warm and nice bathroom. Complementary newspaper
No dislikes. The information in the hotel room on the users should include women as business travellers rather than just infer, in a rather old fashioned way, that it is only business men who use such hotels.

Large room, very pleasant bathroom, good lighting
The window was unopenable. It didn't matter much because it was cold out, but on other occasions... One could not make outgoing telephone calls, and I regard that as a very serious drawback.

The George Hotel, Dorchester on Thames - Reviews & Ratings"I was disappointed in the food. Breakfast was lovely and plenty to eat but the main meals were typically pub grub and very expensive for what they were. " (99292265)
Accommodation was well appointed. Television was just a small portable with no satallite channels. Plenty of hot water but poor pressure from shower. Overall the room was pleasant and comfortable.
The fact that it was outside from the main hotel and the weather was very wet so we had to have an umbrella every day going for meals.

The George Hotel, Dorchester on Thames - Reviews & Ratings"Overall a pleasant place to stay and the food was good, particularly the breakfast. The public rooms were excellent. Good value for money." (99145123)
The room was spacious and attractive. All members of staff were helpful and friendly.
The bathroom was somewhat dated and although adequate could have done with a bit of TLC. e.g. the washhand basin was cracked. Also the carpet was at the end of its life.

The George Hotel, Dorchester on Thames - Reviews & Ratings"Charming village position, but the Thames was further away than we were led to believe. Olde worlde room with tilting floors which was to be expected in such an old establishment but really could do with an upgrade of bathroom fitments and bedroom furniture. Tea tray in room rather poorly stocked - only enough milk for one cup each for the afternoon break then non for an early morning wake up cup that cheers." (99656253)
Friendly staff. Lovely dining room and lounge.
Creaky floorboards and noisy saniflow loo system in our particular room. We were offered an alternative room but no energy to repack and move.

The tV picture was poor, but to be fair we didn't watch, or want to watch, TV. And that's all that we could say was wrong.
