Macdonald Marine Hotel & Spa, North Berwick - Reviews & Ratings"Pleased with overall experiance.TV did not work properly but soon sorted by extremely helpful staff. Nice blend of old and new building and interiors. Good parking. Spa facilities out of bounds to under 16's which is ok if you are adults wanting a rest but i had my 5 and 12 year old children with me!This is the first hotel we have been to which has this policy." staff attitude superb, clean, views, parking.
Restaurant a bit expensive but very good. toilet in room 216 too near wall!, needs moving 6 Spa facilities out of bounds to under 16's.

A period building yet with a multi million pound contemporary makeover - beautiful!
nothing - would have loved a sea view!

Excellent location, very clean and efficient as to be expected.
Lack of climate control. Although it was not a particularly warm weekend, the temperature in rooms was very high, even with window open all day and night and radiator off. No air con and huge heating pipe throgh room ensured it was fairly uncomfortable. Many other guests expressed same opinion.

Bed comfortable, room cleanish, outlook good, all services worked.
Room slightly on the small side with only one chair for two people and the bathroom a bit tatty with dirty tiles in shower.

We initially had a small room due to a wedding party on the day we arrived. We were eventually upgraded to a very nice room overlooking the sea.

Large room, nice linen
The room was very cold as one of the radiators wasn't working and we had to use two electric heaters (which were smelly). There wasn't enough hanging space in the wardrobe even though we were only there for the night. Our view was spoiled by building works in front.

Macdonald Marine Hotel & Spa, North Berwick - Reviews & Ratings"I would like to have known that our room would be on the street, ergo noisy, side of the building. I was glad that there was no construction activity going on while we were there. One of your previous reviews complained about that. Difficult to improve a place when guests are around!" (3304847680)
The room had two beds, as requested (I was traveling with my brother). Sometimes there were washcloths in the bathroom. The beds were comfortable, the room clean, generally quiet except for some traffic noise outside. The breakfasts were very good with plenty of fresh fruit and juices.
No view - parking lot side of the building. I don't recall the web distinguising between the two sides. The room was a little small, but adequate. When we stopped in the lounge for a drink one evening, the server never came back to ask if we wanted another. I had to go find him.

Macdonald Marine Hotel & Spa, North Berwick - Reviews & Ratings"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hotel was clean, the staff very friendly & helpful and the food was of a very good standard. For us personally it would have been useful to have a baby minding/listening service but this was not available. Generally the clientele was a mixture of golfers and the more mature holidaymaker! I would not say this is a family hotel. The hotel is situated a short walk from the town centre and beaches. As far I as am aware there was no ramp or easy access for the disabled and a number of steps had to be climbed to reach the entrance. Could be a problem for someone who is not able bodied. However, there was generally a porter on the door to offer assistance. Overall, a very pleasant experience." (3304528696)
Great location, very clean & tidy, bedroom was a good size. impressive shower
Building work taking place just outside our bedroom window. Was not particularly obtrusive but we were not advised at check-in, bearing in mind the booking clearly stated we had our 18 month old son with us. Luckily he was not disturbed.

Macdonald Marine Hotel & Spa, North Berwick - Reviews & Ratings"The porter was excellent as were reception on check in. The hotel decor, furnishings, bedrooms and facilities were excellent. The spa was very clean and easy to use. Very disappointed in the dinner and breakfast. The food was not up to the standard of the Macdonald Hotels or indeed the cost of £35 for dinner and £14.95 for breakfast. Dinner Starters very small portions and unappetising. Main course - poor choices, small portions, lack of vegetables except for decoration purposes, ( beef fillet was tasteless and tough), Fillet of Fish - very small & unattractively presented, Sea bass was ok.) Sweets - apple crumble and chocolate pudding was ok but white chocolate with pear? was disappointing and unappetising. To charge £3.75 for coffee after a £35 meal is not good value for money. Breakfast - Good menu choice and presentation of buffet. Cooked food prepared to order was disappointing ( e.g. 2inch end of black pudding, fried bread and eggs had been overdone and felt they had been prepared well in advance.) I would recommend the hotel for all its features but say eat somewhere else. Perhaps they should replace the chef!" (2991291)
The refurbished hotel and surroundings were excellent. Decor, rooms and spa very comfortable. Beds very comfortable, with robes and slippers and bathroom with Molton BRown products.
It felt some of the staff were very new and still finding their feet particularly in the bar and restaurant.

Most things
Bar staff were a bit pushy in trying to persuade us to buy expensive whiskies! The first on we were offered cost £20 a single - that's not a usual one, is it?

"Poor value for money considering how much the room rate was." (97059150)
Fantastic location with great views. Hotel very clean and spa services were excellent.
Noisy banging at 3am each night, woken up with alarm calls that were not ordered and staff entering room at night without knocking. 2nd night price hiked up to
