Its an informal freindly family hotel in the centre of Saintes with plenty of restaurants and bars close by.

Clean and pleasant room.
Checked in by the gardener/handyman who obviously had no experiance of the procedure. Only after almost an hour had passed where we shown to our rooms

The hotel itself is in older buildings, which have been tastefully adapted. We stayed here en route to the south west and were impressed by the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. Although the room was fairly small for three people, it was clean and quiet being in a pedestrian area. Breakfast was plentiful and catered for different tastes. We would have no hesitation in using this hotel again, as it was excellent value and a very good stopover if you want to break a journey to the Franco-Spanish border." (3304403925)

WE enjoyed our stay very much. The staff were very helpful and pleasant - always smiling and corteous. Breakfast was adequate, Room always clean, bathroom/towels etc spotless. We liked it because it was SO French - just the experience we wanted. The hotel is in the heart of Saintes - so all the facilities were close by. The wonderful restaurants of Saintes are a stone's throw from the hotel - always nice when we could stroll home after the wonderful meals we had!
The only negative aspect we encountered was the garage facility. Very good to have the option of putting the car in the garage for safety, but we were not initially informed that the garage was locked at 10.30 (I think)at night - hence we found we were unable to use it when we got back from meeting friends one evening at 10.40pm! Luckily we found street parking that night.

The standard of decoration and modernisation were crude. We were charged 56.00 for the room and 6.00 for the garage. Had we stayed for breakfast, that would have been 7.00 each. The following night, we stayed at a small hotel in Brittany, where we had a delightful room and an enormous breakfast for 45.00, all included. The sheets were clean and the water was hot
The decoration is tasteless. The convertion of the room to en suite had been done cheaply. To have only one girl on duty in the evening and none after 20:30 is scandalous. The price for the room was excessive for the low standard offered.

Citotel Hôtel Des Messageries, Saintes - Reviews & Ratings"The hotel is in an excellent location, 100 metres from the bridge over the Charente in the centre of town, but situated at the bottom of a cul-de sac giving a very quiet setting. Our room was a large double, very clean and fresh,the thick stone walls helped keep the temperature of the room down despite the very hot weather, although air con would be an improvement Overall very happy with the hotel, would highly recommend" (2108658)
the room was fine, clean and seemed newly decorated, the mini fridge was a bonus,and the secure garaging was excellent. the enterance to the hotel is through a private courtyard,locked through the night and only accessable with the key code which added to security. The receptionist(an elderly lady ) was always very friendly and helpful although only in french
Despite receiving an e-mail prior to our stay from the owner ,written in perfect english, no one at the hotel that we saw, spoke a word of english.

Good location,good size comfortable rooms, secure garage facilities
Top up of breakfast buffet needs to be better the restaurant area was never busy yet many items ran out and were a long time being replenished. The hotel should not allow children to play footbal in the courtyard area. The reception should be manned at all times especially as the room keys are on open display when handed in.

Would recommend this to my friends and family and hope to stay there again. The building is very old, yet well maintained, and added to the experience, being centered in the oldest part of the medieval city on a cobble stone street that is only for pedestrians. I liked the fact that it the hotel was not commercial or touristy - no bar, movies in the room, or tour buses outside. Caters to people interested in the culture and history of the town. Also the fact that it is non-smoking - the single reason we booked this hotel over others in the first place. Other hotels in France reeked of smoke - not this one." (1573675)

The receptionist was helpful, she couldn't give us another room (stale tobacco smell) but did try and also provided an air-freshener spray. Adequate Hotel for a short break in Saintes." (1426898)

"The Hotel Receptionist was charming. We spoke French but she spoke very good English. We arrived late but this was no problem at all and she was very helpful. The hotel is clean , functional and very well situated in Saintes. This is not a 'posh' hotel but is very welcoming and quaint. Good breakfast buffet, simple but adequate." (99966413)

No lift, which was not a problem to us but could be if you have small children etc.
