Thistle Haydock, Haydock - Reviews & Ratings"We checked into a four star luxury hotel with an award winning chef anticipating something special. The room was on offer at a reduced rate, but we did not realise this would entail reduced standards. Breakfast was served in a gloomy dull room - just outside the immaculate dining room with is white linen table covers/napkins with the sun shining through the windows - what one expects of a 4 star hotel. Sitting at a small bar table without a cover, with paper napkins with a mug of coffee dumped on the table was most unedifying. The light airy conservatory could have been used, with table linen, cups & saucers, teapot, etc., nothing out of the ordinary - just a more civilised start to the day. " (107120795)
The staff were efficient,helpful and friendly. The grounds were well maintained
We requested a twin-bedded room on our booking form but were allocated a double bed. I understand 'special requests' are not guaranteed. However, as only 19 rooms were occupied, I fail to understand why it was not possible to meet our request. The bathroom left much to be desired and is in need of upgrading. The height of the bath made it difficult to climb over to use shower. The white towels were somewhat grey. Breakfast was v.disappoining - no table linen and paper napkins! The poached eggs were an unmitigated disaster, nil points!

When we arrived we were told we could not stay without the card details of which we explained were not ours as it had been booked as a surprise. luckily we managed to get hold of my dad to confirm payment details over the phone so we could check in and complete our stay. The room was lovely and spacious. The food in the restaurant was delicious. The whole hotel was lovely and the pool and jacuzzi were excellent.
The hotel was a little cold. It was ok in our room once we got the air conditioning working but the shared areas of the hotel didnt appear to be heated and it was a wet miserable day so would have expected them to be. Other than being a bit cold everything else was excellent.

the soap dish in the bathroom fell off the wall whist I was having a shower. the facilities are in need of maintainence. The room we were given was at the back of the hotel & took a good 10 minutes to reach. Would not return or recommend. Only plus point about this was the cost which was an internet discounted price.

The bed was comfortable
The room was very tired the bathroom was not particulaly nice the chrome had wore off the bathfitting the tiles looked dirty because of the grout. Overall it felt like it needed a realy good refit.

We had a beautiful meal in their restaurant and if you stay there you should try it. The only negative thing I would have with the hotel, is that I thought the breakfast was a little over priced. Worst of all was that the morning actually started at 6.00 when the fire alarm went off and all the guests stood outside freezing for half an hour. As we are both a little arthritic we found the mattress quite hard There was a constant hum & vibration in the room, enough to keep me awake all night, but not my wife. I suspect it was from the exercise and pool area which was ajacent to our room (201)

I had done this once before while staying at a Premier Travel Inn. Within 5 minutes of finding my shirt, the hotel had notified me, sent the sirt to be laundered and arrange for it to posted to me. If a budget hotel can do this then I don't know what catorgry i would put the Thistle in. And they wonder why budget hotels are popular, it is not on cost but on service and I would expect more from a Thistle hotel." (3304528521)

We assumed that we'd booked room and breakfast as it was not clear from the website print-out, but this wasn't the case. However the staff were helpful in booking us a table for evening meal and offering a breakfast package also. We shall be visiting this Thistle Hotel again." (3304373642)
The room was very spacious and the bed very comfortable. It would have been nice to stay for two nights instead of one!
Our only negative comment was a lack of mini-bar in the room!!

Thistle Haydock, Haydock - Reviews & Ratings"As commented before, the rooms are very cold, despite having the room temperature on maximum from my arrival at 6pm to my departure in the morning, absolutely freezing. The draught from the windows is incredible. Top tip: Ask for spare towels, roll them up and use as draught excluder on window sill! Either that or bed socks, dressing gown, hot water bottle, portable heater, etc" (3304322066)

Very warm and friendly reception area. Rooms very comfortably furnished. Bed exceptionally comfortable.
Hot water system a wee bit slow had to run hot water for a long time before becoming really hot but thought that perhaps room was a distance from main supply. This did not in any way mar our stay.

Close to the M6 so easy to find but were never bothered at any point by noise from traffic. Facilities were excellent - and staff very helpful. Room was of a good size and very clean. There were a number of functions on over the weekend that we stayed in the Hotel. On one night in particular there was some noise in the corridors/rooms but it wasn't too much of a problem! We took advantage of a special festive offer for the room which included breakfast - so certainly proved to be good value for money." (3304109717)
Excellent facilities. Good sized room - good standards of cleanliness.
Could perhaps have a more varied lounge bar menu. You can of course eat in the restaurant but it's nice to have the opportunity of a more relaxed meal in the bar/lounge area. The Room Service menu included a far wider choice of dishes! However, the food that was on the lounge bar menu was of a high standard!

The only other minor thing would be to ban smoking in the bar; then I would bring my family to stay...

Include a plain meat eg, beef / chicken / pork in the hot buffet lunch.

Recent refurbishments have improved the hotel
Very slow check in - only one staff available on Reception Very poor dinner service:- 1. Table not ready until half an hour after booked time. 2. Service very slow 3. Main Courses arrived before starters 4. Main courses arrived not as described on the menu. Indian curry served with noodles instead of rice and no Nan bread served. Steak undercooked (bloody) against order of medium to well done.
