"Overall our stay was very pleasant. We enjoyed having a good pub right on our doorstep!" (97402277)

The room was tastefully decorated, very clean and the staff were friendly. The bar was also friendly, the food and the wine were good.

We must have had a family with children staying in the room above us and it was a bit noisey when the kids stomped around the room, talking loudly. Could do with soundproofing.

It gets better as the food is absolutely 1st class, the beef in red wine was fantastic. Even breakfast was delicious. All the staff were extra freindly and helpful, I will be staying here again definately." (97790769)

Quaint room with hydro bath. Good evening meal.

Thin walls with noisy neighbour which, I realise, the hotel have no control over. Breakfast did not have fish as alternative.

"There were no problems other than the check in at the hotel. We had a very enjoyable relaxing evening and a good breakfast in the morning.I did not know where it was in relation to Rugby centre where i was working, but realised when we got there that Rugby was about 4 miles away." (99505435)

The accomodation was very new with all new ammenities, whilst the restaurant was old with excellent food services and a good atmosphere

The only thing we disliked was the fact that the hotel reception door was locked and it was raining very hard. When we realised we had to check in at the restaurant we were wet through.

  • 8/10 Tim ( Mature couple)

from Bristol , GB  on  July 3, 2007

The accomodation was comfortable, clean and very well equipped. It was also quiet and it was nice to be able to open the windows. We didn't spot any air conditioning but there wasn'y any need for it any way

The only minor thing was that the windows faced onto a hedge so there was no view of any kind. There was a field beyond so perhaps cutting the hedge down a bit would make it a bit more attractive to look out of the window

"In general I would stay again at the Golden Lion" (99923529)

Clean rooms, friendly staff, with a pub and restaurant attached to the hotel.

The restaurant was very small and although we were offered a table in the bar the prices were quite high and we flet we didn't want to eat amongst the bar crowds that were drinking. There was a National Rugby event on at the Rugby School

    Everything fine but see below.

A minor point - I awoke during the night to a rattling sound; it was the bathroom radiator. I turned it off and the noise stopped.

It suited our overall need for a comfortable place to stay just out of the main town.

That there was no lounge / bar area in which to relax after dinner. The restaurant was part of the main bar of the pub.

"The al a carte restaurant provided a good range of food but I would have preferred more information on prices in the restaurant before booking. Better dining facilities could be provided for breakfast. Our room was very hot and stuffy. A small fan was provided but this was inadequate. Ventilation in the rooms could be improved and possibly air conditioning could be installed." (3305082977)

Everything was clean and the staff were friendly. Brilliant bathroom and shower!

The car park was some distance from the door, although there was a dropping off point for luggage. The wine list was mediocre and our first choice was not available. I thought the breakfast room was lacking in character and warmth. It was like eating in a school canteen.

"Superb refit, flat screen telly/dvd/satellite, immaculately clean. The Golden Lion part is still a comfy pub with real beer and a garden rather than a chained hotel with chemical lager and a motorway. The staff are full of friendly personality and when I left a book there they rang me and posted it back. I offered to pay postage and they declined to accept. It really is excellent." (3305091593)

Lovely bedroom and bathroom - everything clean and new (extension had only been open 1 year. Breakfast very good

I would have liked the windows to be larger and higher up. They are very low becaused of the design of the extension.

"I can only recommend this excelent hotel which is clean, tidy and has all you would need for a pleasant stay. Enjoy." (3304275179)

The hotel was clean and staff friendly. Room facilities were good with freeview and new shower unit. The hotel includes a lovely bar and terace area for evening relaxation.

The breakfast was good apart from the scrambled eggs which were not cooked. This was reported to the chef but he did not understand the need to cook the scrambled eggs fully. However upon request from several other guests (who also noticed the undercooked scrambled eggs) he did cook us some fried eggs which were ok.

"Our stay was to celebrate a golden wedding anniversary. We were in a party of 13 and we were all very well looked after throughout the day and evening. Our waiter was great - we couldn't have asked for better! Located in a small village and ideal as a base or for a stopover, but not the place to go for a country stroll." (3304530517)

It was comfortable and clean with a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere. Very friendly staff and helpful staff.

Lack of a view. Also the temperature had dropped at the weekend when we stayed and the rooms were cold when we arrived, although this was remedied when brought to the attention of the management.

general feeling about it was good. Nice room, clean and comfortable and good facilities. Nice bar/restaurant attached and good staff.

nothing really overall very pleasant. Our reservation at the restaurant seemed to be in vain but that wasnt too much of a problem as the bar was good.

"I already knew the area but others may not realise that the hotel is quite as rural as it is and that access to a car is essential if travelling at all. Apart from that we enjoyed the fact that it was off the beaten track and very handy for travel to Rugby, Coventry etc. We did not try the restaurant facilities but if the breakfast was anything to go by then the standard would have been very high. Although we did not need a room that had facilities for people with disabilities our groundfloor room was equiped with several rails in the bathroom and wide doorways to enable wheelchair access." (3304382151)

    Friendly, very clean, good food.

"I frequently make an overnight stay on my way to work throughout Britain.I loathe big, soulless hotels where staff appear to be robotic and guests are an irritation. The Golden Lion appeared to be a small, quiet, friendly, well run hotel where the guests are not numbers.I managed a good night's sleep and a tasty breakfast. It's also very convenient for the M6 and M1 motorways.I will be staying there again in the future." (3304326013)

"The hotel was an unexpected gem, we booked as a result of the write up in the Good Pub Guide, and it was a delight to arrive at on a Friday night after a hard week. Very reasonably priced for such quality accommodation (and breakfast was wonderful), though the restaurant was a little pricey. However we won't be recommending the Golden Lion. We want to keep it secret. No, that woiuld be selfish!" (3304319591)

quality of room, attentiveness of reception staff.

Stop the bar and serving staff gossiping so obviously and so loudly.

the rooms were modern, clean and a good size. The location was tranquil and very pleasant.

the breakfast was good with a large selection of choice. However when eating in the restaurant the starters were good but the main meal was not of a good standard, which let it down.

"An apparently well run establishment, providing top class facilities while remaining small enough to offer a personal and friendly service. The restaurant had limited but satisfactory selection of food which concentrated on quality and good ingredients. The room itself wasn't enormous but made up for it by the super king size bed which made for a restful and comfortable night. the bathroom facilites were also of a high standard with an excellent power shower and everything provided." (2744581)

The extra large bed was very comfortable, the bathroom well appointed and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast menu was extensive and well presented.

"This hotel is completely non-smoking with newly built rooms as an extension to a delightful country public house. Meals are served in the pub restaurant in a semi-formal setting with an excellent choice of regular menu and daily specials. Garden and large terrace area are available and provide the only smoking area for diners. All modern facilities are available and the staff are extremely helpful - although also new to the hotel themselves in some cases. It is small, quiet and very relaxing but with easy (minutes) access to Rugby, M1 and M6 motorways. An ideal and convenient 'get away'." (2481252)

Recently extended, these rooms are brand new and well presented.

Currently (July 2005) the car park is under final construction following building work on the hotel extension, although it is perfectly useable (unmetaled at present with construction style fencing to perimeters).
