"We would recommend it to anyone - we'd love to return and stay in the rooks nest!" (108917061)

The personal touch of the staff was brilliant. We were made to feel as though we were guests in their own home. We were shown to our room, given an umbrella to use when there was an unexpected downpour. We were offered services that in other chain hotels we would have to ask for.

It was a bit noisy outside the hotel with revellers passing by throughout the night and also inside with guests who were also 'enjoying' themselves. But it's an old building with charm not a sealed characterless box!

"The stay at the Rookery was as a hotel should be, relaxing. The staff were very helpful and happy to assist, i would recommend the Rookery to anyone!!!" (108310502)

After staying at several places within the same area of London, i would definatley return back to The Rookery, by far the best hotel, location and staff, it was a pleasure to stay there.

I feel that because of the cost maybe the breakfast could have been included in the cost, however this wouldn't stop us staying there again.

    "Enjoyable if expensive." (97023008)

The hotel itself and our room was very well appointed, in keeping with the 18thC fabric of the former houses themselves. Our room was comfortable and the mini bar was well stocked with a good selection of items. We enjoyed the potted histories of previous residents of this part of London that were contained in the information pack in the room. We liked the Conservatory downstairs with its own mini bar where one could flake out after a long trek. The hotel is very accessible for the attractions of the City and London as a whole. The staff were polite, friendly and accommodating.

We found the Cowcross St side of the hotel to be very noisy at night in what should be a quiet backwater: There was, for me, an unacceptable level of noise from outside the hotel from revellers and others. Making one's way back to the hotel at night could be daunting for some, considering the number of pubs close with many people congregating on the pavements outside. If we stayed again, a room away from street would be a requirement. The lack of a lift and car parking facilities could pose problems for some visitors.

Loved the location and set up. Overall the impression of the hotel was very good. We both liked the decor, furniture and general ambience. I would love to stay there again but please see point about the nightclub.

Overall I enjoyed the hotel and facilities. I work in the location and know the area quite well, however I hadn't realised there was a club nearby that involved all of the punters queing for hours before it opened just across the street and getting into party mode. A bit noisy to say the least. Not a place for a quiet weekend break.

"A very pleasant experience, rather like being in an elegant house in town rather than a hotel. Made our daughter's wedding weekend an even greater success." (97604261)

Character and individuality, quality of furnishings etc, attention to detail, willingness to accommodate early arrival.

No bad points really. People waiting to get into a nearby club created some noise, but not for very long, and this is central London after all.

"No lift. The original room I booked, had only a bath. The shower did not have a curtain or a fixing to use the shower one handed. The Rookery kindly changed rooms for me to a ground room. I am slightly disabled. I would book another stay here as long as could have a stand-up shower rather than a bath. Otherwise great!" (97082912)

Individual hotel, not at all faceless

Still a bit noisy at night despite being in the city and at the weekend - sash windows were very pretty but didn't keep noise out!

"This hotel is quite an experience, and a polar opposite to bland box-like hotels. It is not quite as it seems - the paintings are prints for example, but the decor, furnishings and personal service are interesting and unexpectedly delightful. Our request to have breakfast served not in our (three) rooms but in the courtyard caused some confusion. The hotel's position could not be more central and convenient for Farringdon underground station. We found it a little noisy, but then we are unused to an urban environment. My brother's ground-floor room was a little public, and my elderly parents' attic room rather too much of a climb - perhaps they should have been warned." (99330258)

"The one big problem that the hotel had when I was there but was not of the hotel's making is the noise outside at 4.30am - 6.00am in the morning as a local nighclub emptied. It was horrendous and did disturb my sleep. This is a real problem that will cause problems for people staying over at the weekend especially. It affected my Sunday night stay but there wasn't a problem on the Monday night (Night club was probably closed)" (99764696)

Cosy atmosphere. Beautifully decorated and very comfortable room. Friendly staff.

The sink in the bathroom was old and cracked and modern taps would have been appreciated. Also, a hand-held shower would have been useful in addition to the overhead shower. Shame there is no breakfast room - an English cooked breakfast would have been great.

"Small, cosy and quirky with individually named rooms after folk who had lived there at one time or another - mine was named Clarice of Cokke Street, a woman of disrepute in the 19th century apparently(!), the hotel has a high standard of decor, lots of antiques and my room had a really comfy bed and air conditioning that worked perfectly. Room service was not overpriced and the food was good. Fluffy white towels and a bathroom with a huge claw foot bath, a rain shower and Aveda toiletries were all designed to make you feel very pampered. Its location on the edge of Clerkenwell with the bars and restaurants of Smithfield Market just around the corner was perfect and Farringdon tube station just a stones throw away. For quiet moments its lounge with honesty bar and courtyard were peaceful and relaxing. A real find for a reasonable price in an extremely convenient location." (3305250625)

"We booked a weekend expecting it to be quiet, as had been suggested by other feedback. It was not, with noise all the time from passing pedestrians, traffic horns and a front door that banged loudly every time it closed. This disrupted our sleep every night. The hotel was incapable of organising a taxi for us because it was raining! However, the in-room continental breakfast was very good." (3304275871)

A very nice period building, beautiful decor, very friendly and polite staff.

The ONLY area the hotel should improve one is the cleanliness of the rooms - it just did not feel clean and smelt of smoke when I came in.

  • 8/10 Anonymous ( Solo leisure traveller)

    Quiet, characterful and well located.

The room did not have sufficient lighting. A reading light above the bed would be helpful. Also, there was nowhere to put soap, shampoo etc when I was taking a shower. Finally, the TV was too small and the remote control did not work from the bed.

The staff clearly care about the hotel, are knowledgeable, attentive and very helpful with suggestions & directions to local points of interest. Our room was very spacious and comfortable. "I think it is a ''Gentleman's Hotel.'' Even as that. it would be difficult to read any documents in the room. We were going to an important function and a better light in the bathroom (for make-up) would be helpful. Would have liked a full breakfast menu too. That's all though. It suited us very well for one night." (2536498)

"At the weekend, the area is very quiet (very few people in the streets and many shops and eating places closed) but one can sleep with the window open. There are some bars, restaurants or clubs open but they are not noticeable. On Saturday, there are places to eat, including breakfast, but Sunday is more difficult and it is necessary to travel. The tube and buses are near the hotel." (2071611)

"This is a little out-of-time hotel very convenient for us coming in from the North via King's Cross. Oak and old book decor was very relaxing and quiet and relaxed sums up the general atmosphere - except for late night street noise with the window open. We were late making dinner plans and couldn't get in 'name' restaurants but found good food locally with no problem." (2046093)

"The Rookery is a slightly quirky, old-fashioned hotel with a club feel. My room was wood-panelled with an excellent deep bath and brass fittings - it gave a nice feeling of comfort and elegance. Food is by room service and my one meal was entirely satisfactory. The man who delivered my supper was pleasant and didn't hover waiting for a tip, for which I was grateful as I feel that these staff should be fully recompensed in their salaries - and I didn't have any change anyway." (1949198)

Comfortable; pleasant, unobtrusive service; nice bath
