January 31, 2012Great location, beautiful clean and newly decorated room with comfortable bed, nice bathroom and modern boutique decor. Loved the fact that I could take my dog with me which was great to be able to walk her on the beach and then return to the hotel with her. Great value for money and a laid back relaxed place to be, nice to be able to hang out in the seafront lounge with the papers and a sea veiw. There was no trouble with any noise as some other reivews have stated. Will definately be returning.

January 2, 2012We loved the location right by the sea and the open fire as you walked into the hotel. It was very homely and welcoming. The room was modern, comfortable and clean.
No complaints - we would definitely stay there again!

September 22, 2011The design of the hotel: it had original artworks on the walls and the rooms were just a bit different from the average hotel bedroom. Comfortable bed. We upgraded our room to a sea view one on the first floor for a special rate. The top floor one was much simpler (no sea view, no art work on walls, plainer bathroom). This new room had a lovely bathroom (not in modern, functional terms but just - slightly unusual and eye-pleasing). The staff were truly wonderful. They were all really friendly, relaxed, informal yet efficient and you felt there was nothing they wouldn't do for you. The sea view was lovely to wake up to each morning. Excellent breakfasts, beautifully cooked, fresh fruit always available and proper coffee!
If we had to grumble it would be the size of bedrooms (they are small) and not enough space to put things on in the bathroom. Also, if you lose your sense of humour if everything isn't super-efficient (eg. we didn't always get our morning paper but they apologised so nicely we didn't mind and it's so not a big deal anyway but might be for someone ...) then it might not be the place for you. But I think other things make up for it. Don't go if you want enormous rooms, super-luxury and sycophantic staff and a huge menu. Otherwise go and enjoy it.

August 30, 2011Staff were very friendly and facilities were good. Breakfast was nice. The location is excellent.
You need better beds. There were a number of us staying and we all commented on the lumpy beds. The hotel is mid range in terms of price, so I would expect the bed to be of a good standard. Pretty basic in somewhere to stay in to sleep.

August 10, 2011Lovely sea views although we had a room at the rear of the building over looking the car park. Staff very friendly and helpful. Lovely food although the cheif who cooked dinner was certainly not the same one who cooked breakfast.
The bathroom was really nice although the glass in the windows was completely clear and so the blind had to be down the whole time especially as it was above the bath. Breakfast was really cold and we had to ask for it to be done again but was fine on the second attempt. This did not in any way affect our stay which was lovely.

July 16, 2011The staff were friendly and the hotel had a nice feel to it, with bold and interesting design. The view from the balcony was great, as was the food. Being right on the front directly in front of the sea was our main reason for booking and that certainly didn't disappoint.
It felt slightly disorganised - we had to ask for a few things at breakfast. The room was quite small, and overall I would say it was slightly over-priced. We did enjoy our stay though

July 11, 2011We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Sandgate and we hope to return in the future. The location was fabulous and the facilities, although not luxurious, were very much to our taste. We were made very welcome by all the staff and we would certainly recommend it to friends and family.

Very grubby and shabby decor. The bed was small and uncomfortable.

June 21, 2011My job involves spending a lot of weekends in hotels around the country and this was by far one of the best, the price was very reasonable for the location and the staff were very welcoming and friendly. We ate in the restaurant and the meals were of a very high standard as well as being good prices, in fact my boyfriend thought that the breakfast was the best he had ever had in a hotel (I didnt have one as I was too tired from all the travelling). We had paid extra to have a room with a balcony overlooking the sea and it was definitely worth it as the view was great. The rooms themselves were small but they were decorated very nicely and were clean. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone and if I am ever working in the area again I will definitely book again.

May 11, 2011Location
The hotel needs a serious makeover and cleaners to keep it clean. A new chef is also needed I don't know when the carpets were last cleaned. We were in room 8 and it was very clean. Our booking showed a double with balcony and room 8 didn't have this. We were given a bottle of wine to compensate this which was way off in comparison.

March 8, 2011Staff were polite
Being asked to pay for the room before even seeing it and also before even staying there. Room 'poor' and could have been cleaner. Shower curtain did not cover the whole of the bathroom window therefore making it impossible for you to take a shower without being seen by the houses on the hill overlooking the hotel! (The bathroom glass was clear). The curtains for the room were more like voiles and therefore were incapable of actually blocking anything and you daren't have your light on for the houses overlooking the window could see directly in - no privacy!!! One of the lightbulbs was out but staff did nothing about it when it was mentioned to them at reception- staff polite but disinterested in making you feel comfortable.

February 1, 2011location, room was good, bed comfortable, and also had small balcony overlooking channel.Breakfast good, staff friendly.
Car parking a bit restricted, especially when a jaguar is parked in the middle of the three spaces available, and not parked very well. Room had just been decorated and there was a strong smell of gloss paint in the room, but you can't have gain without pain

January 27, 2011Sea view was excellent as right opposite the beach. Breakfast and staff were good also.
I found the bed rather uncomfortable and the room noisy due to the single glazed windows.

The pleasant and helpful staff, closeness to the sea, value for money. Welcoming bar. Very good breakfast.General atmosphere is good for all ages.
The decor, though smart, is getting tired - chips on furniture, water in bath goes out very sluggishly, chain broken on bath plug, carpet stained. No full length mirror. Though in these hard times, a refurb would add considerably to the cost so all in all these complaints are fairly petty. i
