"Not exceptionally good or bad, but was a good location. Oddly amused that I had to pick up a phone and dial zero to attract the attention of the lady on reception, even though she was less than 6 foot away through an open door." (107190799)

    Location, space in room, comfort

noisy radiator, very noisy pipes humming when toilet flushed

poor car parking, poor quality rooms at the back of the hotel, the staff did not seem to be very welcoming.

We have never been treated by hotel staff, anyway before, like the way we were treated by the polite, courteous, caring young man who checked us in and took us to our room.Nothing was too much trouble. We will stay again the next time we visit for the local festival. The mineral water and biscuits were a bonus.

The room was a little dark.

Good value for the price. Excellent food served at the hotel restaurant with very good portions.

Hotel corridors rather stale smelling. Need more ventilation. Bathroom extremely small, especially washbasin. Very difficult to wash your face without getting the floor all wet.

    evening meal was excellent

fire alarm was triggered twice, once by a guest smoking in their room and the other time no one new. no one checked that all guests were out of their rooms and we couldn't leave the premises, door locked and staff not on site

"Although far from luxury, for the price with breakfast included, I don't have any complaints about this hotel and will stay there again when next in Bedford." (97366384)

Comfy bed, freindly staff, exellent breakfast included in price.

TV did'nt work properly, hotter-than-the-sun towel rail right next to toilet (hard to avoid burns!), main room light flickers all night long.

"This small hotel and its excellent staff provided not only an attractive setting and accommodation, but personal, friendly service from the nicest hotel staff members that we have ever known. Our needs, which at the time were more complicated than those of the average traveler, were met and exceeded beyond our hopes. The complimentary breakfast and service were also excellent. The location of the hotel is very convenient, as it is within walking distance of shopping areas, restaurants, and a train station with fast service to London." (3305348179)

Lovely lobby area and charming room.

"We would have liked to have known before we went that there was no evening meal served on Sundays. Otherwise we thought the accommodation was adequate and reasonable for the price." (97050866)

The accommodation was clean and the breakfasts were very good.

We had a family room with double bed and single bed. The double bed was very comfortable but the single bed badly needed a new mattress - it was very uncomfortable indeed. The evening dinner was nothing exceptional - pretty standard fair.

  • 5/10 Chris ( Solo business traveller)

from Norwich , GB  on  June 26, 2007

Friendly staff and my room was quiet (but I had requested that - and there was a noisy extractor fan around the corner that would be outside other people's windows).

The fact that my room was basically the fire escape, with a non-opening window and unsecure door (i.e. the fire door), which was only held shut by a latch with no external handle (i.e. not a proper fire door mechanism).

  • 6/10 Peter ( Solo business traveller)

    Cosy environment and pleasant staff.

Access to room was difficult. Room was very small / restricted headroom. Fan / smoke detector were inoperative. Bathroom was tacky.

"We went to the Hotel with friends and had two double rooms booked. These were quite far apart and when we asked to be moved to the room opposite them the staff were happy to oblige. This room was bigger and more modernised than the first. Overall we found the room clean and quiet. Found all staff to be friendly and welcoming. The breakfast was also a pleasent end to our stay. Could do with a bit of redecoration in the rooms but was not awful or anything. Was slightly worried after reading some review on the internet but found all these to be unfounded really. Slightly overpriced mabe but was a pleasent stay. Would like to thank guy on reception who name we do not know. Cleaner looked like the lady from postman Pat and was also very nice. lol" (99381466)

The man at reception was most helpful and friendly. He couldnt do enough for us.

    Nothing really.

Room was noisy. People upstairs were awake from 5am and it seemed like they were in our room. Bedside light did not work, remote control for television without batteries, smoke alarm not connected english breakfast was adequate

Our room T.V. was something from the seventies. The evening meal was of a poor quality, served badly and the menu expensive in relation to what was on offer." (99433215)

    Good Parking. Staff Helpful.

The Room : Small, Dark, Too Warm, On an Annex. Evening Meal was Poor. Beds uncomfortable.

"The stay at the Shakespeare hotel was overall enjoyable. The staff were friendly and the rooms had everything that you would expect from a hotel apart from satelite television. I was a little dissapointed that the hotel bar was not open at all during the day and evening of my stay which was a Sunday although the location of the town is within walking distance from the hotel." (3304900192)

The placement of the hotel was close to the town centre, the staff were friendly and the rooms were comfortable.

The hotel bar was not open at all during our stay which was very dissapointing and caused us a little inconvenience. The quality of the breakfast served in the morning was poor and I'm sure if the romm had satelite television the stay would have been alot more comfortable.

"Rude, surly staff. The car park was not big enough for all the guests and the surrounding roads were double yellow lined. My car got blocked in by other cars and I could not leave when I wanted to. A wedding was being held at the hotel during our stay, which we were not informed about and we could not use the bar or restaurant in the hotel on the night of the wedding." (3304082339)

The food at the hotel restaurant was lovely and from the outside the hotel looks very nice.

The worst thing was the unclean, small rooms that are in desperate need of modernisation.

The soap comes in small sachets of liquid which are far too inadequate. If staying at this hotel I suggest you take a bar of soap!" (3304730016)

Room appeared to be in annexe, could only see tv from one bed and no comfortable chair to view. Breakfast was good however cleaning staff very rude, couldn't have made it any plainer we were being discussed by them.Talking about guests in front of them is not good manners. Had to wait to check out, receptionist very uninterested, no conversation etc.Car park full of cars because of function so couldn't get out when needed, no apology, comment, nothing." (3304637845)

"this was a new location for me during my visit to DeMonfort University for a symposium for my teaching degree. With this in mind it was a very good base. There were no problems, hassles or issues as far as I was concerned. Parking arrangements could have been advisd as the parking area was insufficient for the number of residents and off-site parking is 'permit only'. The food and service staff were outstanding. Every day was started with an excellent meal, good service and pleasant attitude. Worth a stay if a little pricey." (3304080319)

"In general this Hotel is a good choice and I would stay here again if I ever need to go to Bedford. Very young staff but willing to offer a good friendly service. Comfy cosy clean single bedroom with all basic facilities for a good value for money (winter special discount)." (3304274660)

Practical cosy single room, good quality/price and not too far from the centre.

Opaque spray in the bathroom window. Even small and with a net curtain, I feel unconfortable with a clear window. Add some custom-made screen to the bath to avoid spillage and some protection to avoid slippery surface when using the bath. Add more channels to the TV.
