"Overall, very satisfied with our 2 night stay. The staff were friendly and the service was, in the main, satisfactory (no-one serving in the bar one evening: had to wait for one or two items of the cooked breakfast). Car parking was a bit tight - we wondered if there would be enough space if the hotel was full. We would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Buxton." (99895611)

"I would have liked to have known beforehand the size and type of the rooms. I would have liked to have known there was no air conditioning - the rooms were too hot. The food - particularly the breakfasts - were the one thing that lifted this Hotel out of the ordinary." (99701234)

    Food. Politeness of Staff

No air conditioning. Small room. There were times when I had to go looking for members of staff when I required some facility. I booked a twin room but this was not offered upon arrival and I had to debate this with the receptionist.

"We have stayed in several Best Western Hotel both here and abroad this was one of the best." (108091412)

We were delighted with our dinner-very good ,allsame breakfast

We booked our evening meal for 20.30 and arrived down from our room at 2025 ish we were asked to sit in the bar area to select our food etc. We are not football fans nor particularly TV fans that part of our supper was the only downside.

Hotel well situated 5 minutes walk from the Opera House and Pavilion Gardens. Sitting out area in mature gardens.

Everything, good, spacious, clean, comfortable bed etc.

Unfortunately the shower did not work, no pressure and no hot water, it may have been because we were at the top of the hotel. And, as an elderly pair, we found climbing the stairs up to the tower! a bit arduous but not overly.

We found the hotel accommodating, well placed and the staff helpful. The hotle has a degree of character

Particular room (24) comfortable & well equiped but clearly engineered into a difficult corner and therefore a bit quirky. However it worked.

"Atmosphere and hotel staff very pleasant. Lovely dining room in the conservatory. Good bar and reception area. Everywhere spotlessly clean. I would describe the hotel as 'shabby chic' - some of the decor could do with a bit of sprucing up. Overall a very pleasant hotel and only 5 minutes walk from the town centre." (99971223)

The hotel was a more traditional type rather than modern, therefore it had character.

Would like to have a choice of blankets rather than duvets, which are rather warm.

The bedrooms were clean and adequate.

We used two rooms in the Hotel which was Ok but in both of them the bathrooms did not have anywhere to hang/place the toileteries bags also the baths shouldhave had a supporting handrailfor getting in and out of the bath there was one for anyone using the shower but we both found difficulty in getting out of the ath in room 14

"Had we not been able to upgrade our room I think my review would be on the negative side. However, with the room sorted, we had a very pleasant stay. The eating area was light and airy and in contrast to the main body of the hotel which was rather dated. Staff were friendly and helpful." (99627121)

The restaurant/breakfast area is essentially a large conservatory which is very pleasant.

The room we were allocated was cold and on the small size. Fortunately we were able to upgrade to a larger room which was quite pleasant.

"An excellent country house hotel - staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful - the room was well presented and comfortable. The food was of an excellent standard - the atmosphere of the dining room very good. Visitors should be aware that the hotel is situated on a fairly steep hill, albeit a pleasant short stroll into town." (99404154)

Staff were very helpful and friendly - standard of the food was excellent

The 'power shower' left a lot to be desired! However, we were on the top floor - and a hot bath was much more relaxing anyway!

"Most staff were friendly. We would have liked to have known that a wedding had been booked as we were told that we were unable to order food when we arrived at about 12.30. Hotel generally smelt strongly of cigarettes even our non smoking room. We watched the football on Sunday with a member of staff sitting on a nearby table smoking and drinking throughout the whole match. This did not seem appropriate, other residents OK but not a member of staff." (3304864482)

Breakfast area was very pleasant indeed. Breakfast was good and staff seemed polite.

Room down at heel. Shower head held on with electricians tape. Television did not supply channels that hotel brochure said. Told lady at checkout and received frosty response, no apology offered. On Tuesday night we stayed at the Salutation in Ambleside which is a Best Western hotel and is generally far superior.

"Before booking, we read the comments on the Active Hotels website and cannot agree with some of them. The hotel was quite full but never seemed too noisy. It was true that it took some time for food which we had ordered to be served but it was well worth the wait for it to be prepared specially for us. The menu was just that little bit different from usual and there were some lovely combinations of flavours. The portion sizes were not too large so there was no feeling of being overfaced as sometimes happens, leaving room for one of the excellent desserts!" (3304786116)

Staff were friendly and helpful and communication between members of staff was appreciated. The food and service were of a very high standard and it was clear that there was a close hands on approach exercised by the Managing Partner." (3304155470)

The hotel was warm and the people were welcoming. The room (12) was exceptionally comfortable

"At first sight the room appeared very disappointing. It was smaller than we had been led to believe following exchange of e-mails with the hotel, rather cramped with a partly-slanting ceiling due to stairway and a view over a small grotty courtyard. However, the room was spotlessly clean with just about every need catered for from a fridge to a shoeshine sponge and an extremely comfortable bed. On the first evening the hotel had a very large charity event which inevitably affected the service given to paying guests. However, the chef was still able to adapt his menu to cope with a series of food intolerances which we had mistakenly not informed the hotel about beforehand. The food was extremely fancy and by the third evening meal we did find ourselves longing for a simple meal with a dish of vegetables." (3304163921)

clean, warm, and comfortable with excellent facilities.

ensuring that large functions donot affect paying guests. food was excellently prepared and cooked but, being of a Nouvelle Cuisine style was not particlarly plentiful.

Pleasant situation, comfortable room, excellent food in excellent surroundings.

Detail maintenance, room radiator valve very stiff, bathroom extractor fan inoperative, bed cover stained. Restaurant staff just a little slow to clear empty plates, (but much nicer than our last hotel in Egypt where one was lucky to finish each course before the plates were snaffled)

We would happily stay there again at the rates available online with Active Hotels (room £60 per night B&B)." (3304124371)
