The George Hotel, Hexham - Reviews & Ratings"Poor" (108316500)
Staff friendly
Service deplorable in restaurant and bar. Tables not set properly, not cleared, breakfast buffet bar not re-stocked, service extremely slow. Cracked basin in bathroom, bathroom door sticking and not closing properly. Gardens not properly cared for, ash-trays not emptied. Hotel needs an urgent makeover, both physically and in management.

The George Hotel, Hexham - Reviews & Ratings"Very disappointing and certainly wouldn't stay there again." (107330110)
Restaurant/reception areas were clean and staff were friendly.
Room was very dusty, paint flaking from window sills, unable to use curtains as hooks were missing, toilet flush handle was hanging off, shower head holder was coming away from wall, room was very warm. Ladies toilets on ground floor were very dated; room was in desperate need of airing. What appeared to be sewerage had overflowed from drain in garden and not been cleaned up (garden chess game was very close to the drain).

The George Hotel, Hexham - Reviews & Ratings"Liked the area, but probably would look elsewhere for accommodation." (107421140)
Female staff were friendly and obliging. Lovely view from room. (second room!) Very attractive grounds, including rabbits! We stayed there due to it's close proximity to Hadrian's Wall! Enjoyed the wednesday night entertainer.
Waiters, primarily were rather surly as though we were a nuisance. On suggesting that the salad might have had some dressing, he replied that he would pass it on, but next day, the salad garnish was served up the same. The first bedroom that we were given, there was a builder working outside on a flat roof and despite it being an exceedingly hot day, if we had reamained in that room we wouldn't have been able to upen window for ventilation. The room that we then had and stayed in was rather out of date, very small bathroom, a window that couldn't be opened as it appeared to have been painted shut and rather grubby.

The George Hotel, Hexham - Reviews & Ratings"Wouldn't go again. Wouldn't recommend it. Restaurant food nice, but very basic menu. " (107742162)
Lovely situation. Nice gardens.
Bathroom in poor condition. Room very basic. We were the youngest couple in the hotel by at least 30 years. Staff were quite unfriendly and seemed to think we didn't fit in there.

The George Hotel, Hexham - Reviews & Ratings"See above. I shall be making a lot of trips to Northumberland, so the hotel could have enjoyed regular business. The worst experience at a hotel for years. " (107757000)
Lovely setting. Good size room. Reasonable / comfortable furniture in room.
Appalling reception: no eye contact; no greeting; form eventually just put in front of me for completion. Had been travelling for 7 hours (from Devon) and had not eaten. Restaurant closed (9.30pm), no room service - wouldn't even make me a sandwich. No help with my bags - I am disabled. Had requested a room near reception, but was placed right at the end of a lengthy corridor. Receptionist (he) seemed completely unconcerned. I could go on.

Comfortable, view excellant, quiet as expected, idea location
Servicing of rooms ? due to lack of staff. Restuarant lacked atmosphere and service not always as expected. Hotel is showing it's age and have concerns about state of stair carpet.

The George Hotel, Hexham - Reviews & Ratings"Very good value, much better staying in a hotel with character than in a hotel which could be anywhere in the world. I had read some of the recent negative comments on the internet regarding this hotel and I think either we were lucky or the hotel has improved." (107306517)
Excellent location right by the river and proximity to other villages; nice garden; great service in the restaurant and very good value for adequate food; nice lounges and areas for sitting around for drinks or tea; very quiet at night for sleeping; food served on very hot plates
Very old sunken, sagging mattress; creaky floors; banging doors

Even though decoration and furnishings in our room were old fashioned they were fine and the bathroom fittings, also of an older generation performed as well as more modern fittings would have done
No bad points at all.

Staff were friendly and tried to do their jobs as best they could. The location was great.
shower atrocious as it ran too hot, ran too cold and even ran dry!!! Mattresses were saggy and lopsided. The pillows were old and lumpy. The dining room presented us with no clean tables and the breakfast was very weak. Toilet papaer was rationed!!!

The George Hotel, Hexham - Reviews & Ratings"Comfortable enough for a short break. Enjoyed the pool, jacuzzi and sauna." (107574304)
Quiet comfortable room. Lovely position by the river. Staff willing and helpful.
Long narrow corridors. Not suited had we been disabled. Dining room service a little lacking. We had to ask for bread rolls to accompany our starters. My husbands starter contained stale, curling brown bread and wilted salad accompanying his smoked salmon, which was miniscule despite the extra charge. It was replaced when pointed out but should never have been served.

The George Hotel, Hexham - Reviews & Ratings"No thank you, not again" (108006297)
The bathroom was dirty with black mould on the shower tiles and shower curtain. The loo handle had cobwebs coming out of the untiled hole around it. The shower ran boiling hot or freezing cold and could have caused injury. The toilet needed some bleech as there was a dirt rim at the waterline. Worst of all there was a fire alarm at around 1am. Guest evacuated themselves but the on duty staff (2 I think) gave guests no information, took no roll call and did not tell us when to go back into the hotel.

The George Hotel, Hexham - Reviews & Ratings"Lovely hotel spoilt by lack of training of staff. Dirty room, dirty changing facilities, peeling paint and wallpaper, dirty windowsills and dirty pipes. An old hotel is acceptable but a dirty one is inexcusable. I will be sending a letter of complaint to Crerar Management and to Brentwood Hotels." (97647865)
Food was reasonably good although bad service detracted from the overall effect.
Leisure facilities were appalling. Filthy conditions must be a health hazard.

The George Hotel, Hexham - Reviews & Ratings"We booked on a bed and breakfast basis but informed reception that we would after all have dinner in the hotel, but were surprised that we were not offered the same rate as had been advertised on the wedbsite. The setting of the dining room is excellent.. the lounge is cosy. However, some of the buildings, especially the lobby leading from leisure centre into garden, are in desperate need of attention!" (97619898)
The room was comfortable and pleasantly furnished, well supplied with all the necessary for tea/coffee making
the shower curtain in the bathroom was dirty. The process of getting from room to dining room and lounge was long drawn out and somewhat confusing.

Location
Swimming Pool was very small and seemed to be used by local youths. Decor needs updating - wallpaper is peeling off the wall in the dining room. The food was excellent, however, there is very little choice with vegetarians limited to one or two options - mostly fish and the service was too pushy to get us to order quickly.

The George Hotel, Hexham - Reviews & Ratings"My partner wished to fish but the river bank was completely lined with tree's making it imposiible to cast. This was one of the main reasons we wanted to stay there. Breakfast was a shambles with the buffet being very untidy and with tea bags just left on the side, hardly any food there at the time we went in. Service in the restaurant was dreadful with the waitress forgetting my order of eggs for breakfast. No one seemed to be in charge at all. Our room did not have any soap or toilettries in it when we arrived and we were handed these at reception rather than them being put in our room. All in all a very disappointing stay." (97224726)
Furniture dowdy and the most uncomfortable bed and pillows which were like rocks.
