  Staff were polite and helpful. Food was good

  Room smelled initially, leak in the roof with a bucket under it. Lack of facilities. Hotel was a bit threadbare and in need of updating.

  Food in Bar was good

  The decor was very shabby overall. Attic room was small and inadequate for business. Breakfast took 20 minutes to get served and even than it was not up to much.

  "Really enjoyed it and would use again rather than the motel chains." (107633714)

  The hotel is in an old building and, as such, one should expect quirks and not perfection. The floors are slightly uneven and creak a little, the rooms are all very different and there are lots of stairs and no lifts. The hall and stair carpets are in need of replacement but I understand this will happen soon. The reception area was being refurbished during our stay and should be bright and welcoming once finished. I need a gluten free diet for medical reasons and this was no trouble at all - the chef was quite happy to refresh my own prescription bread. The breakfast was fantastic and my husband didn't want lunch as he was so full after his breakfast. The service both at reception and at breakfast was friendly and helpful.

  If you are looking for "plastic perfection" this is not the hotel for you. No lifts so probably not a good choice for the disabled.

  Staff were pleasant and attentive. Food was superb. Surrounding excellent for a stroll before dinner.

  I have a limit for overnight accommodation and tried to book again 3rd June but the minimum price shown was £25 more than the 2 nights I stayed. Whilst I am happy to pay extra myself on occassions I cannot afford £25 extra regularly.

  "I think the Hallgarth could do much better even without the expense of refurbishment. A happy team and a willingness to do that little extra would certainly go a long way both in reception and the breakfast room. The whole experience for me was like going back to the 70's where anything would do - well sadly today that is not good enough if repeat business is high on the agenda. When I told my local business colleagues where I had stayed they did not think very highly of the hotel either. Such a shame as it could be a very nice venue. " (107266301)

  Location is delightful although I was only there one night so did not really get a full appreciation of the setting.

  I travel a lot and prefer to stay in quiet country hotels rather than the main chains, so I was looking forward to staying at the Hallgarth. However on entering the lobby my initial reaction was that the hotel looked very very tired. My initial impressions were not helped by the brisk and not particularly warm reception process either. My room also needed some TLC as the decor is very dated and the room furniture was a little worse for wear. The breakfast was okay but again just lacking a little something that one would expect. On leaving the hotel the bill was paid but again with no warmth or any discussion on the stay.

  Setting and grounds excellent and peaceful - Bar and Catering Staff, when you could find them, were friendly and helpful. Breakfasts fine and well staffed.

  Rooms a bit run down and shower poor - Beds most uncomfortable. Bar meal not value for money. Less volume and a little thought to how it was prepared and presented would enhace the experience. Coffee some of the worst I have ever had at a hotel.

  Evening Reception. Whilst I understand that to break off in the middle of something can be very irksome, a brief acknowledgement of people's presence would not interrupt workflow.

  "Other than the details already mentioned I have no problem with this hotel and would gladly stay there again. Dinner was excellent and breakfast perfectly cooked.   The room was clean and comfortable. I liked the original 'antique' furniture in the bedroom. The food was excelent and restaurant staff very helpful.

  The decor in the room and bathroom, was a little shabby and the The armchair in the room too uncomfortable to sit in. The shower was elevated and there was quite a high step to get into it.

  "Would have preferred a choice of rooms even if they were more expensive. Just because we booked online we didn't expect such a poor room. The worst accommodation roomwise in all our years (20) of visiting the North East." (97085708)

  The restaurantwas excellent. The food lovely, well presented and delicious.

  The room was very poorly decorated and furnished but worst of all was the old bed and mattress - hardly had any sleep due to this.

  The bed was about the only thing that was good about this hotel

  The majority of my stay i was extremely dissapointed by the attitude of the night staff and could not find a helpfull member of staff.

  "The Hotel is situated in a quite and open area, we did not feel very confined. The Manor house was tasetfully decorated and not spoilt by a few modern touches. A very relaxed atmosphere. We would have preferred more information on places to visit locally (not much literature displayed). Oue visit was in December 2007 which was very cold. The room was warm, cosy and clean, although tea making facilities were poor in quantiies. But saying this you do have a Cafetiere with coffee, which was rather nice to have. Breakfast was quite adeqauate with a good choice of Cereals and a hearty cooked breakfast to follow. A very clean and relaxed atmosphere. We would strongly recommend this hotel." (97890415)
