April 12, 2011A great stay let down by sub-standard food served on two nights out of a three night stay.
Hotel has plenty of old world charm and history. Excellent location for all the major towns of the Wye Valley, Forest of Dean and the Welsh border. Excellent cooked English breakfast.
Sadly, our evening meals were ruined by the food being too salty on the first night and this was highlighted to the staff. The second night we wished to dine in the Tudor dining room, however, it was decided to close it 5 minutes before our arrival (20:30 Hrs) as they had no bookings or interest. We decided to eat in the main bar. The potatoes had hot & cold spots in temperature and the vegetable were rather 'mushy', indicating that these items had not been cooked to order and had been heated/reheated in a microwave. Overall, considering the price, the food was sub-standard.

April 13, 2011One of the best places I have ever stayed, definitely the best hotel I have stayed in. Plenty of character and charm to the property. Alongside the excellent service, definitely a place I would revisit.
The staff were excellent. In spite of there being a lot of diners, guests and a wedding party, the kitchen and bar/waiting staff were excellent. Always staff on hand who never made you feel as though anything was too much trouble. Breakfast menu was extensive and of quality. Really nice atmosphere. Good, comfortable outside space. Food available was of quality and menu extensive. Lovely location. Gardens were lovely.
Not bad as such, but would have liked more comfortable seating. After a day out it would be nice to have had somewhere to go to relax. Dining room and bar were excellent but not hugely comfortable for an evening.
