"Very good experience and no where near a Macdonalds or Happy Eater." (97831172)

A clean modern decor but character hotel offering good quality service and accomodation. Comfortable attractive restaurant with excellent value good food menu. All inclusive room and breakfast tariff makes this traditional hotel price comparable with the so-called budget get-up-and go chains but without the long corridor surroundings. Pleasant short walk through tree-lined paths immediately outside which enables the necessary breath of fresh air after the wine and dine.

Room slightly too warm in the annex accomodation for comfortable sleeping but we used all the bed cover and could have turned the heating down if we had been a bit more clever before we decided to sleep on top of the sheets.

"I am a regular hotel patron, I would not choose to stay in this hotel again. There were no tea bags and only two tubs of milk. The room claustrophobic, the bathroom was minuscule. Having said that the room was described as a three quarter double. If you are going to stay there, select the annex, it will be quieter." (99624196)

    Staff friendly. Car parking good.

Expensive for what it is. I reserved three rooms, Two double and one single. The single room bathroom was bigger than my double room. My room was called a three quarter room, it was realy a single room with a slightly larger bed. dirty cups in cupboard, road noisey.

"Considering the age, history and location of this building, it is in a good state of repair and decoration. We have stayed here twice previously and on each visit have noticed improvements since the previous visit. The location is ideal for easy access on foot to Newcastle and is a only a short drive to Stoke, Hanley and Trentham Gardens." (97847805)

The heating was not working in the room we were initially allocated. We reported this to the Manager and the room was changed immediately with no quibble. All staff very helpful and friendly.

"It was not clear from the on line booking that although the room slept 4 it had only double beds so my 2 teenagers had to share a bed. One of these was a sofabed with a very uncomfortable mattress. The room and bathroom were very clean and the food was good. I think it is difficult booking a family room on line because you cannot be sure what the beds are like or whether the room is large enough." (97503458)

Good food both evening meal and breakfast. Staff all very friendly and helpful. Room near to the car park so convenient for unloading the car.

Noisy near to the road Others in our party hed quieter rooms.

"The hotel can't help its location and I found it a bit noisy at night, I also felt a bit vulnerable being on the ground floor, in the annex and right at the edge of the car park. I had no problems during my stay though and the staff that I had dealings with were all friendly and helpful. I did provide my own teabags and milk as there are never enough complimentary ones supplied for my needs and I don't like the taste of the long life milk. This is something I do in any hotel that I stay in and I always suggest they provide a small fridge in each room. So far they never have, perhaps your hotel could start the trend?" (99958904)

Only needed somewhere to sleep as visited family in Merseyside each evening so can't comment on restaurant, bar or other facilities as did not use.

Booking was made on my behalf and breakfast was also booked. I did make it known that I would not be bothering with breakfast as it is not a meal I ever eat but I was told that it would still be charged for - I think this is unreasonable and wonder why a degree of flexibility could not be introduced.

"We should like to have known beforehand that our room was in an annexe to the hotel, across the carpark, and not in the main part of the building. Also, the route through the carpark is used by some drivers as a shortcut to avoid traffic lights, and on one occasion my husband narrowly avoided being hit by one of them turning in at speed. In general, we would have expected a far higher standard of cleanliness in our room for accommodation in that price range. With a little refurbishment, I would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel." (99415117)

Staff extremely polite and helpful. Breakfasts very good. Location very convenient for town and university.

The bed was damp and stained. The mattress springs could be clearly felt. The bedcover was stained and grubby. The room smelled unpleasant and was very dark.

The breakfast was good and the staff were very helpful both at reception and in the restaurant. I think the written description before booking was very accurate." (99564579)

It was very accessible to newcastle, keele, stoke. Breakfast was very good, bar was nice, staff were very helpful.

The bedroom smelled of stale smoke i think it must have been used as smoking accomodation before the ban.

"The hotel reception and public areas are in the main building, with accommodation predominantly centred on an annexe across the carpark. Rooms were very tired and in desperate need of redecoration and upgrading to today's expected standards. The general standard of repair and cleanliness did not help the overall tired appearance." (99512118)

Nothing, apart from a reasonable position with good parking facilities.

Very traditional accommodation.... tired and in need of refurbishment.

Friendly, helpful staff and some of the food was better than I expected. Convenient location.

Physically not very attractive, and the toiletries etc are a bit spartan - could afford to go for better quality. For £50 per night in the provinces it seemed really rather expensive for what you get. I had to ask for a hairdryer both times I've stayed at the hotel, even though the website has this listed as standard in the room

(3305267356)

Close to New Vic Theatre, inexpensive, friendly and nice breakfast.

Noisy motel-style annex that smelled damp, even though it was summer time!

"Good hotel in general, but the carpark was a little restricted for the larger car. The location was very close to the town centre and therefore excellent for walking around. There is a small Park opposite for a general stroll." (3305153222)

Ground floor layout excellent, breakfast excellent, staff very friendly and helpful

The bathroom - very clean and spacious BUT there was a problem with the drains and a vacuum occured leaving a terrible open drain smell for approx one hour. There has probably been many more bathrooms added in recent refurbs and the drains may not be able to cope. We would not be put off by this however, as hopefully someone will point it out when staying longer and it would be put right.

  • 8/10 Brian (Solo leisure traveller)

"Comments as above. I would like ALL hotels to grade the bed firmness in each room (say 5 for very firm to 1 for soft.) I would like all beds to be referred to by their sizes. eg. King size, queen size standard etc. Room location should be clearly indicated where it may occupy a noisy location. But generally it was a good hotel and I would certainly use it again, though I would probably specify a room in the annexe." (3304754344)

    Good welcoming and helpful staff.

    1) Bed too soft. Beds should be all firm with soft top up mattresses available. 2) Room fronted main road and was noisy. A discount or quieter room should be offered at check in. 3) Restaraunt closes too early.

"Although the hotel looks shabby on the outside inside reception, bar, restaurant, room and corridors areas all clean and bright. The weather was exceptionally hot when we were there and we appreciate this was abnormal. The lack of anywhere cool to store a bottle of water etc.was a problem and the single room my son had was even hotter until staff opened the window. The yogurts in the breakfast room were not chilled. More or less what you would expect from an older town centre hotel in England. e.g ask at reception to borrow the hair dryer. The member of staff in the bar was very helpful and welcoming and this is a pleasant place for a lighter meal. Ok choice if the location is right." (3304748650)

location of hotel good for our needs. Bar friendly and food available quite late.

Traffic noise. Our son's room was very hot and window difficult to open. Blankets. No fridge. bed too narrow. Shower control hard work. No curtain in bathroom. Bathroom window lock broken and easily accessible from fire escape.

"Although I knew the hotel was on a busy road, I hadn't anticipated visiting during a heatwave. The inner corridors and bedrooms were stiflingly hot and we had to have the windows open all night, the choice was therefore between being kept awake by the traffic or being kept awake by the heat! The hotel staff were very friendly, though and it was Ok for one night, and not too expensive." (3304906612)

No air conditioning, old fashioned decor, traffic noise from busy road, no bidet.

Security. We were staying in the annexe. Around 3 a.m there was a disturbance by 4 youths also staying in the annexe, they were shouting and banging on doors. They returned 40 minutes later and repeated the process. This was very frightening as we are in our eighties and feel there should have been some sort of night watchman to deal with these kind of issues.

"The hotel itself is reasonably presented and handy for the town centre. The food is good (though the catering for vegetarians is somewhat limited). From the view on the site, the rooms looked quite pretty - however, the actual room we got was in an annex and looked like virtually any Travelodge. Not a problem in itself, but we'd thought we were booking something a little more homely. This wouldn't have been so bad as the room and the service were acceptable - but when we came to check out, were significantly overcharged on two items and when this was challenged, we received no apology but simply a revised bill which was rather grudgingly given. Not something to complain about per se, but it seemed a sour note on which to leave." (2920976)

    It was very conveniently located.

Checking the facilities more regularly would be worthwhile: the hot water was *dangerously* hot and fast in both the shower and the bath.
