Dorchester is a happy example of a traditional county town with its bustling shopping precincts, elegant 18th century houses, broad walks and varied cultural life. With much to offer in relaxation and rural charm, there are many places of interest and beauty to visit nearby. Picturesque villages and old towns all featured in Thomas Hardy's novels, mingle amid largely unspoilt countryside. Nearby attractions include: Dinosaur Museum (5 km / 3 miles) - this nationally renowned museum is dedicated to dinosaurs and the fascinating world in which they lived. Exciting and innovative displays complement exhibits of actual fossils, skeletons, and life-size reconstructions. Athelhampton House and Gardens (5.5 km / 3.5 miles) - one of the finest 15th century houses in England, containing many magnificently furnished rooms and Grade 1 19th century gardens. The Jurassic Coast (16 km / 10 miles) - the 153 km (95 miles) strip has become the first natural site in the country to be awarded World Heritage site status by UNESCO. Monkey World (12km /8 miles) - the internationally renowned ape rescue centre set in a 65 acre wildlife park, as seen on television series Monkey Business and Monkey Life. It is Dorset's most popular tourist attraction.
