    Not a huge choice on the menu but it tasted fine and was cooked and presented well.

    Threadbare carpets around hotel. Bar area and dining room very outdated, a bit grim. Dressing table light not working in room. Very uncomfortable mattress. TV sound was poor. Shower was little more than a spray. No bathmat. Ugly old floor tiles in bathroom. Some staff brusque and unwelcoming. Made to feel like anything was too much trouble. Small portions at dinner, no water or bread offered, some menu items missing, some cold on arrival, breakfast not FULL as advertised. If you have been quoted a certain price on booking be sure to take the confirmation copy with you. Even with this the receptionist called the manager to sort our bill out as we were being charged the full amount until the manager intervened.

    Room size good. Beautiful setting (spoilt by motorway nearby - see bad points).

    Miniscule portions at dinner only tolerable by special offer of 2 for the price of 1 meal deal. Motorway so close meant too much road noise could be heard in the bedroom - perhaps noise absorbing barriers and the new quiet tarmac would reduce the intrusion - we shall be emailing the Dumfries & Galloway council regarding this. No tea or coffee facilities in the room as advertised on the internet and when asked the very grumpy receptionist advised that the facility had been withdrawn and guests would be receiving an advisory letter, our letter never arrived. The wherewithal to make a drink in the room could be purchased but the same grumpy receptionist had no idea how much to charge. The very worn carpets in the corridors desperately need renewing.

    Pleasant reception & bar staff. Bar Meal lovely. A bus trip has decended on the hotel so staff were very busy but remained pleasant and very helpful at all times. Gretna is a lovely location.

    Cold Tap in room was too stiff to turn on, had to get help from bar staff. No book in room detailing hotel info so had to walk to reception to get help, no phone numbers avail. Carpets in hallways very well warn. My room was very narrow so the double bed was shorter than normally (I am only small and my feet overhung the edge). The room was an odd shape, so presume other rooms are bigger. It is a 3 star hotel and they have updated the decor in the bedroom rooms which is nice, but the bathroom tiles were grubby and you got a lot of road noise from the motorway that is nearby. Squeeky floor boards all over hotel.

    Very clean, very friendly and helpful staff. Good location, ample parking, beautiful grounds.

    There was no tv (a note gave an explanation).

    Staff were very friendly and helpful

    Bed was very poor. Lumpy and exptremely uncomfortable and room smelt very stale as carpets and curtains require cleaning. Thought Hotel had been refurbished but obviously that was years ago as the carpets in corridors we stayed in were totally threadbare and patched with black duck tape. TV not available in room as advetised with a silly notice about HD TV coming to area which has apparently been the on going excuse for the last two years - humph. Why not get HD ready TV for rooms - a likely tale!!!!!!!

    Outside and Garden

    The bathroom didn,t look clean. with all black between the tiles. There was no tv in the room, when we asked to change rooms, the receptionist told us there was no rooms with tv's in, because of the digital change over. We decided not to stay there, so asked for our money back, The duty manager was not very helpful although she did offer us a room with a tv. which we'd been told there was none. We still left,we were not happy after been lied to. It might be a good idea to look at the room before you pay, because they don't like to give you your money back.

    Great value hotel, staff were great room was great, evening meal was ok, breakfast was brilliant, room was good. would definately recommend and would use again on our way up to scotland. We took advantage of the 2 for 1 offer in the dining room great value.

    Cant realy say anything bad.

    lovely old-world main reception and building

    threadbare carpets, rotten wooden windows, tired decoration, the waiter in the breakfast room was not English and was mumbling and not easy to communicate with, just adequate breakfast compared to other hotels.

    room was very clean and a beautiful setting

    needs refurbishing but not so as to loose its charm. Lots of leaflets on display but needed more telling of whats on in the immediate area especially on places to eat.Only found out about 'The Devils Porridge' from googling be proud of your area and promote what it has to offer. A visitor needs local things as well as further afield

    Hotel set in lovely gardens - it was nice to be able to sit outside. Reception staff went out of their way to address any shortcomings. Prompt service in restaurant at dinner and breakfast although bar snacks through the day took inordinate length of time to arrive.

    Hotel is in need of a full refurb inc good double glazing. Carpets worn and threadbare. Did not sleep first night due to springs in mattress protruding. Reception staff managed to find another room. Bed in 2nd room was slightly better. Due to close proximity to motorway there is a droning noise of traffic even through the night if at the back of the hotel.

    Quality and choice of food was reasonable and fairly priced. Location is close to the M6 motorway and to my place of business.

    TV in room was of very poor standard. Only 4 terrestrial channels available but the reception of these was very poor. What plans have the hotel got when this region goes digital next month? My room was facing the motorway and traffic noise at night was too loud.

    Cost of stay very good.

    The hotel needs a refit, it was clean but shabby.... the carpets were threadbare in parts and were held together in others with duck tape !!!!

    "Stayed with my 11yr old daughter & my golden retriever dog.We were made very welcome.As we had the dog, our meals were brought up to our room without any delay.The room was a good size and in excellent condition.The breakfast was outstanding - plenty of it and served hot! The hotel grounds are beautiful and no restrictions for the dog. We cleaned up after her as any responsible dog owner would do! I have no complaints whatsoever. Our stay was very enjoyable thanks to all the staff." (107778610)

    hotel looked shabby,carpet all worn and had thick black tape in places,lift not working and no notice so had to lug case up stairs,room smelt damp and looked shabby,mattress looked as if it needed changing as springs were visable and was not comfortable.

    "We were at a wedding it felt very impersonal. 8 weddings in one day it was like a convayer belt of weddings. Ive been to other weddings at gretna in other locations, this not up to standard. you need to book your Ideas up or you will loose custom." (107192255)

    The hotel was close to local shops by car and local pub within walking distance. bar staff were very friendly. (but could do with more) Rooms were basic but very clean.

    The food was dreadfull, Drinks very expensive, (for a time there was only one staff member trying to serve 20-30 people had to wait one time more than half an hour to be served). Carpets in hallways threadbare. due to amount of people about ( mostly children) there was a lot of mess

    Mildew growing on wall of bedroom, dust and dirt in bathroom, dust found in commnial areas, stains on bar and dining room funiture. Debris on the floor. Bar food was bland and tastless so much so that after the first night we went out for food. Service was slow and unorganised. My end bill was incorrect and the hotel contacted me to say that they needed to collect more monies. Bed was so hard it was like sleeping on the floor.

    i asked about a late check out and was told i would have to pay £25 extra for both rooms i had booked to stay an extra 3 hours which i thought was ridiculous ,as a result i will not be using swallow hotels again.
