"Woefully disappointing; we have already emailed the hotel to say so and given details as to why. Stow-on-the-Wold is a delightful place; this hotel lets it down badly." (107908239)
Bed linen, towels and bathrobes.
Chipped and peeling paintwork in room and on approach, very dirty carpet on approach, rather dirty carpet in room, very cramped bathroom, poorly furnished, no hairdryer, smells from kitchen unwelcome and far too close to room, lack of atmosphere, slight language problem with staff, grossly overpriced.

"Nice hotel, people friendly but the receptionist not organised" (107900880)
Room was full of character, clean and warm
The receptionist called us at 10.30pm at home the night before we were booked in as they had got the wrong booking date. When we did book in the next day they had lost the fact they had taken a £50 deposit straight out of my bank at time of booking the room, so I then had to go to the bank and get proof.

Quiet well specified room at the rear overlooking private parking. Brilliant shower with bags of hot water, and central heating very good on a very cold night.
Unable to make TV work and the shower-room was on the small side.

"The staff were very welcoming and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. We ate in the hotels bar twice and in their 947AD restuarant once. The food was absolutely amazing (the only way I can describe it)! We were very impressed with every aspect of the hotel that we will definately be staying in the hotel again." (3305196560)
The bedroom was spacious, clean and had everything we needed.
The shower wass a little small, but suitable for what we needed.

"The hotel did not live up to expectations. We were met by a dour man who booked us in with the minimum of interest shown and information given. The room was disappointing. The bed took up most of the room and the decor was drab. Breakfast was good, but we had a very disappointing meal in the hotel bar one evening, so did not use it again; not only was the food distinctively average, the service was almost non-existent. As a jumping-off point for touring the Cotswolds it is well-placed, but it needs to raise its game and not be complacent, which was the overall impression we had." (3304987180)
The age of the hotel gave it character.
The room was no more than adequate; small, basic facilities.

"Stow on the Wold is a picturesque town and the Royalist Hotel is in the centre, although also on a busy main road. The room was comfortable and the hotel facilities adequate. Our cooked breakfast was tasty although the portions were small. Overall we enjoyed our stay at the hotel and loved the Cotswolds area generally." (3304318888)
Excellent location in the centre of Stow on the Wold.
We had an attic room and found the bathroom to be very small, the bath tub was very short and there was no fixed shower as an alternative to the bath

"As a foreign tourist in England, I chose this hotel above comparable ones because of the historical links. As a matter of fact you would have to work a bit to find out what was historical and what was not, but still it is a feel good place. What I did not know before going was how little choice there is in Stow on the Wold at night, for restaraunts, and anything else (or at least on Tuesdays), and how packed it is for lunch when the market is on. Both of these create potential problems with the hotel, but in our case we ended up satisfied. However my head is still sore from the short, 1000 year old, doors--beware." (3304664495)
Historically very interesting, being the oldest in UK and also having the oldest restaurant, and also very clean and well kept. Staff were friendly and helpfull, Breakfast was first rate.
Banged my head on the doors, twice, I guess people were shorter 1000 years ago. A bit of traffic noise, and parking is not always available although I got lucky.

"As stated above we were very impressed with the welcome and friendly atmosphere at the hotel. Not surprisingly, our Brazilian friends were paricularly impressed with the age of the hotel, as based on the date, the building was in use some 500 years before Brazil was discovered. As a general comment, much is made in the guide books and hotel guides etc of the historic features at the Royalist/Eagle and Child e.g., the leper hole and bear pit. I was given to understand that the former still exists under wooden trapdoor in the dining room of the Eagle and Child. As part of our historical heritage it would be nice if this could be on view, perhaps fitted with toughened glass in lieu of the timber and lit internally." (3304751214)
We were sightseeing in the Cotswolds with some Brazilian friends. We found the hotel staff very courteous and helpful, and the standards at the hotel first class. For our friends, the welcome and general atmosphere certainly helped dispel the myth that the British are formal and unwelcoming to tourists.

"As we had booked in a rush, it was a total surprise to find out that we were staying at such an historic inn. The decor is sympathetic to the period, but with modern, comfortable touches. Apart from the rooms, there are two cosy lounges in which to browse books or relax with board games and papers. I found by accident on checking out a piece of paper denoting the history of the hotel; I would have like to received this on arrival so that I could have explored more thoroughly - for instance, checking out the secret hidden entrance to the tunnel which goes through to the church over the road. I've never stayed anywhere before where fresh cafetiere coffee and cookies were provided in rooms. The hotel has brilliant access to the town. Bear in mind that most shops etc start to close down from 4.30-5pm, there is very little going on at night, which suited us, but if you want something more lively you would need to consider travelling to Cheltenham etc for the evening. Overall, a really enjoyable stay for walks, visiting stunning villages, eating out and relaxing." (3304770277)
Bundles of character, special touches in the room such as cafetieres, home-made cookies. Means to change temperature in room (both fan and electric heater provided). Feeling of having some space away from other accommodation (we were in the Derby suite). Queen sized, comfortable bed. Staff very welcoming. Delicious, non-greasy English breakfast.
If staying for more than two nights, the lack of a stand-up shower may have become tiresome (it was a very hot spell), but that's just the little cross to bear from staying within ancient walls! (but may be a consideration for older people or those with bad knees!) The croissants/pastries were quite burnt at breakfast. There was a lack of front desk cover, meaning that our papers were very late on the second day and we had to wait a few times for our key, but it was appreciated that staff were quite rushed and performing several functions at once!

"FROM THE MOMENT WE WALKED INTO THE HOTEL THE STAFF WERE REALLY HELPFUL AND SHOWED US UP TO OUR ROOM WHICH WAS THE DIGBETH ROOMWHICH OVERLOOKED THE MAIN STREET IN STOW. THE ROOM WAS EXCELLENT CLEAN ROOMY AND VERY WELL DECORATED. ONE MINOR POINT WAS THAT THE BATH HAD BEEN CHIPPED DUE TO PREVIOUS PATRONS DROPPING THE SHOWER HEAD IN THE BATH. THE BED WAS COMFORTABLE AND AFTER A LONG DAY WALKING WE HAD NO PROBLEMS SLEEPING EVEN THOUGH THE FLOORBOARDS ABOVE US CREAKED A LITTLE. THE BREAKFAST WAS SUPERB WITH MY WIFE HAVING SMOKED HADDOCK AND POACHED EGGS AND MYSELF THE FULL ENGLISH BOTH FRESHLY PREPARED AND USING TOP QUALITY PRODUCE. OVERALL AN EXCELLENT HOTEL WITH ONLY A FEW MINOR GLICHES. WOULD WE STOP HERE AGAIN? YOU BET WE WOULD." (3304184893)
The atmosphere and the friendly staff who couldn't do enough for you.
Lack of staff periodically made us feel that the hotel was understaffed. (However this is being really picky)

"My room was located in the old part of the hotel but was pleasantly modernised. The double-bedroom was extremely spacious and the en-suite bathroom was pristine. The continental breakfast which is served in the dining room was absolutely excellent. Parking was easy and I would definitely stay at the Royalist again." (3304633171)

"The hotel is located in the centre of Stow yet is quiet enough to make you think you are in the countryside. Very old building full of character with not one plumb wall or level floor. The hotel may pose problems with the diasabled. When booking I advise asking if the main restaurant is open as the alternative dining area is a bit of a let down, though the food is excellent." (3304559610)
Good location, small hotel with friendly staff.
Although the food was excellent I found that the pub like eating area let it down. The 947AD restaurant in which we were served breakfast would have been much nicer.
