    "The historic setting was most interesting and we enjoyed our stay." (107389895)

    The receptionist had a difficult situation since my bookings were not registered and naturally I was upset as I had booked the Ruthin Castle as a treat for my daughters..but we were very comfortably accomodated in upgraded rooms.

    The rooms were not booked.

    staff polite and very helpful

    booked on internet quoted £108. Wedding invitation suggested 10%discount.When queried told that discount already given. On monday following stay my wife and I suffered vomiting and dioreha for three days. Iwonder if you have received reports of any other guests having simular illness

    Beautiful hotel with fantastic grounds to explore and very well situated for the local attractions. Peacocks were wonderful.

    We were in one of the pre-refurbishment rooms but it was perfectly comfortable and reasonably clean. Very good value for what we paid when booking with ActiveHotels.com

    "Overall the experience was good and excellent value for money. I did not feel that there was anything else I needed to know prior to arrival and we very much enjoyed the wedding which was the purpose of our stay." (97538266)

    The room was very big and the facilities were good eg comfortable bed and good shower.

    It was rather dated and the smells from the kitchen tended to pass through the corridors that led to the rooms.

    "Our past experience is that is a lovely place to stay - very restful and very clean. This hasn't been our recent experience. What should have been a relaxing birthday break to me from my husband left us feeling exhausted and irritable through lack of sleep. There is a fantastic Chinese restaurant around the corner called The Panda Garden that I would highly recommend." (99893946)

    Having stayed three times - we have found previous stays very relaxing an enjoyable. I love the grounds and the newly refurbished rooms are luxurious.

    Our bath was full of short dark curly hairs and our loo brush was full of loo roll and excrement. The windows and doorframe in the restaurant were full of cobwebs. We were in a room behind the kitchen and were kept awake by chatter and laughter from staff. Our bed had a metal bar down the length of it which made sharing a bed very uncomfortable.

    "Ruthin Castle Hotel far exceeded our expectations - room was comfortable and spacious; view was glorious. The weather was not ideal but the public areas of the hotel provided space to sit and relax and the restaurant was excellent so it didn't really matter. The delightful market town of Ruthin is just a short walk away down the drive. Altogether a peaceful and restful break - which is exactly what we were looking for. We intend to come again."     "This is a good hotel which is striving for excellence. They have recenlty applied to build a leisure complex on the site but in my opinion they should get the rooms done first. It is certainly a more interesting stay than most hotels provide due to the history attached to the castle and grounds. The location makes it easy to use as a base for exploring the rest of North Wales and English border counties. The customer service is excellent and the food is superb and if you don't fancy a full restaurant evening meal the bar menu is excellent." (99595107)

    The location and grounds are excellent. The public communal areas of the hotel are extremely well kept and the atmosphere is good. Extremely customer focused staff, great service and excellent food.

    The room, we did have a discounted rate and you are warned before you go, but the south wing rooms need urgent refurbishment. This is not a complaint, just an observation. UHT Milk, there is no place for this in a Four star hotel. Cartons of non UHT milk are available from suppliers and a little research will resolve this issue. You can't make tea or coffee with UHT milk and you should not expect the cheap option in any hotel striving for Four stars.

    VERY ENJOYABLE PLACE TO STAY. THE BEST COOKED BREAKFAST I'VE HAD IN A LONG TIME.OUR EXECUTIVE ROOM WAS SPACIOUS AND CLEAN.

    THE FLAT SCREEN TV IUN OUR ROOM HAD A POOR PICTURE AND THE PEACOCKS WERE A LITTLE NOISY.

    The bedroom accomodation was very dated and tired. We were told that the rooms were not in the refurbished part, on arrival we were told we had been upgraded but the level of accommodation was poor.

    "The room was in need of updating, but this was not a problem, and was far outweighed by the rest of the building. The hotel is in the process of being refurbished which is a major project with a property of this age.The dining room was very elegant, and the food and waiting staff were exeptional.I would use this hotel again just for the service and quisine."     "Overall a good impression. Good parking facilities,great location, friendly staff, good food. One point only on the downside. Both my colleague and myself ate in the bar on both nights and the food was excellent. However on the second night both starters and main course were served all at once. By the time we came to eat the main course, it was cold. I mentioned it to the waiter, who said he would say something to the chef but that was the last we heard. I have never known any hotel to serve both starters and main together" (99793500)

    Proximity of a large wedding party.Service patchy,reception slow and unresponsive at times in other areas.Lack of customer focus possibly due to an event being held.

    "Ruthin Castle is set in beautiful grounds and is quite grand. Some parts are a bit tired and in need of money spent on them but our room was very comfortable, we had a lovely view out over fields and the breakfast was just amazing! I wish we had been told there was a very long walk and stairs to our room as we are a mature couple with arthitic problems. We were told the room was 'just along the corridor' when in fact it was a very long hike with stairs! One good point was that a fan was requested and this appeared within 5 minutes." (99083928)

    Although I had read dire reports about the South Wing, our room was bright, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was out of this world!

    Very long walk to our room and the fact that we also had to go downstairs unaided with luggage (and up again).

    "We loved the hotel and the historic castle grounds. The staff was very friendly and courteous to all of us, including my 7 year old son. He loved the hotel and had a blast exploring the 15th century castle ruins and watching the peacocks! One of the groundskeepers took time out of her busy day to point out some important areas in the ruins!" (99180952)

    We loved the historic atmosphere and the gorgeous grounds! It was also very nice to be able to have a short walk to the stores and pubs in Ruthin. The room was beautifully appointed, very spacious and most importantly, the beds were comfortable!

    We could not control the temp in the room. It was a little hot and stuffy in the room even with the windows open. It would have been nice to have a seperate temp control for the room.

    "We went to the medieval banquet and another couple there also had a superior room - and from our conversation we determined each room was decorated individually and that they loved theirs too. The room was really large, had a huge king size bed, big deep bath, plasma tv, some antique furniture, a couch and we had plenty of room for our baby's travel cot and plenty of room for her to play. The castle itself is gorgeous and we had a fantastic time. we didnt get much of an opportunity to explore the grounds though, as there was a wedding on when we arrived, and the next day was raining. we wish we had of just went of exploring, but we didnt know where we could go without intruding as there were people from the wedding scattered everywhere. Breakfast was fantastic and in a beautifully decorated room. Service overall was great. We also used their listening service for our baby while we attended the medieval banquet (which i would highly recommend to anyone - it was a fantastic night) and staff were exceptional." (99698813)

    we booked a superior room in the main castle and it was fantastic. It was really spacious and had plenty of room for us, and our baby and all her belongings! the decoration of the room was impressive!

    "Fun stay, we shall return in the future, small details need fixing, blocked off pipe in bathroom(rm208) , tatty wallpaper and scuff marks, horrendous pipe banging at 0600 hours. woke us up! Generally a good feeling and good value for money. I have to say the breakfast was one of the best I have ever had in a British hotel, good locally sourced food, toast made with real bread, nothing bore the tell tale horror of catering food.     "I was a little worried after reading some of the reviews however I did not want to turn up the chance to stay in a castle. It was excellent! There was a lot to see and explore in the castle. The staff was helpful and nice! Breakfast was great...and plentiful, not to mention a wonderful atmosphere! I would recommend this place to all of my friends and family and will be going back with out our child too! We stayed in room 211 which was big enough for us! 2 adults and 1 child (9)." (99697592)

    Restaurant, bar and lounges were all attractive and in good order. The staff were helpful and courteous. the evening meal and breakfast were excellent.

    Our room was in need of refurbishment, the hot water ran brown initially and the room smelled of cigarettes.

    The main part of the hotel was very impressive. The staff were helpful and friendly. We stayed at the hotel for a wedding, and the food for the wedding meal was excellent.

    The bedroom was disappointing in comparison with the rest of the hotel, as was the breakfast in the morning.

    "Ruthin Castle is a lovely building, in the process of being updated. The surrounding land and views are nice. Food at dinner was very good, although a little expensive. Breakfast was hot and a good choice available. Two weddings and a medieval banquet going on whilst we stayed there. Which added to the atmosphere, otherwise it would have been very quiet. Major disappointment was that we did not see the ghost of the Grey Lady!!! Plenty of other spirits behind the bar to enjoy. Overall we enjoyed the stay." (99553697)

    "We enjoyed a really good long weekend break, on our way to a continuing holiday in Snowdonia. We much preferred the 'antique' character of Ruthin Castle to the rather more impersonal style of most modern hotels. The latter are virtually the same wherever in the world they are sited. Ruthin Castle is unique, and very much part of its locality. We found the staff all to be very welcoming and helpful. They were friendly and one could engage in civilised conversation with them. This also contrasted with the staff in many hotels of an 'international style', where staff can sometimes be patronising or unnecessarily ingratiating. Ruthin Castle has much to reccommend it, and we would stay there again if in the area." (3305194070)

    Our accommodation was comfortable and had an excellent outlook over the fields. We really enjoyed our stay.

    There was little to dislike, although the hair dryer did not work, and it seemed that some maintenance (probably unknown to the staff) was needed at the external gutter, which showed signs of leakage. These are both very minor quibbles!

    "The website does not clearly show the state of the rooms - if they are being refurbished then the price should reflect this, thankfully the manager upgraded us to a more suitable room had this not been the case I would have been very disappointed. However the staff were absoultely excellent and should be complemented on their efforts, the food is very good too.     Large newly refurbished bedroom and bathroom. The fact that the hotel is a castle, you don't normally encounter suits of armour on the stairs.

    Corridors need upgrading to match the rooms.
