    Although not large, the room was comfortable with two large windows and all the facilities that we required.

    The hotel was in the process of conducting some revonations to the corridor outside our room - we were woken quite early on Saturday morning by the builder's radio and hammering...

    Excellent service and very good food.Welcoming foyer with space to read, relax, enjoy surroundings.Central location.Parking available.

    Allocated single room was very small. Toilet was miniscule.Noise level on Saturday night was high.

    "what a lovely hotel! when I arrived at 6.30 pm the room had not been completely cleaned. There was no fuss and nonsense when I pointed this out en route to my meeting, they agreed to move me while I was out and I duly returned at 10pm to a lovely upgraded room.     "We had a lovely overnight stay at The George and would definitely visit again and stay at this hotel. The George is in an excellent position and gives an excellent service to its guests. We needed a nice relaxing break and The George was just right and the surrounding area is very beautiful." (97281967)

    The George had a quaint old fashioned atmosphere, very good service facilities, excellent position in the centre of the town & Free parking.

    There was only one thing which I could complain about and that was the musty smell in the room, I couldn't decide if it was the drains or just the fact that it is in an old building. But it wasn't the decor or bedding because that appeared to be relatively new.

    "We had a very pleasant stay at the George. There were no negatives except that the restaurant was full and we had no idea that we should have booked this earlier.     "This is a wonderful old fashioned working hotel. We particularly enjoyed the afternoon tea served in the lounges. The staff in the restaurant were superb and nothing was any problem to them." (99860626)

    The room was comfortable and clean with all the facilities we needed. The brand new HD Ready flat tv was a bonus.

    The amazingly small choice (these days) of tv channels. The slope in floor in the corridor leading to our room. The lack of secondary glazing which allowed external noise into the room.

    "It would have been good if the parking directions were on the website. After parking outside the hotel (which is a limited time drop off point), we were told that we had to go back on to the road system and follow it right round to come to the back of the hotel where the car park was. As we were there on a Saturday night, we didn't bother as the limited time restriction finished at 6pm and wasn't inforce the next day." (99278033)

    The bed was excellent. The room was clean and perfect for our needs.

    Good location, good parking facilities, friendly staff.

    Bath was tiny, so small that you could not sit with legs straight. The grouting was mouldy in places. Room had an odd smell

    "Overall the stay was adequate but, from wide experience, for the prices being charged I would expect a lot better. If you like older type hotels this is the one for you but if you want a more modern setting then I would go elsewhere." (99132950)

    Quaint setting. Nice decor downstairs. Friendly staff.

    Facilities were not really up to the standard req. The rooms were dark with door security that would have been really easy to get through. The TV only had 3 channels all of which were fuzzy and the noise from the pipes kept me awake. (I will admit this was due to the hotel being fairly old)

    "On being notified that the toilet was not flushing properly, it would have been a gesture to have offered a reduction in room tariff rate. I was staying overnight on Good Friday so the hotel looked very full. I appreciate therefore that other rooms were probably fully occupied. But this was a very expensive one night stay without any sanitation! Luckily there are trees close by - and a public toilet in the bus station next to the municipal carpark which I eventually discover." (99124449)

    The breakfast room staff were courteous and helpful when I asked if there were any other parking options close - and also brought me a coffee refill (American style) which was appreciated with the food. The staff doing the vacuuming were also very helpful, and friendly.

    Toilet was out of action - and water supply appeared inadequate to flush it. Hotel car park was full - so had to park on street and get up and out before 8 am to move it before wardens arrived. Hotel staff should and could have explained this prior to booking when they phone me prior to departure, and on arrival could and should have explained that there was a municipal car park not that far away behind the bus station. On returning from the local function that I was attending in Penrith just after 11.30 pm, I found that the main door of the hotel was locked and no-one answered the night bell for around 20 minutes. By that time other guests (who had been at the same local function) had also arrived and found themselves locked out as well. Not good.

    Relaxing atmosphere

    Room was a little small and there was a strong smell of cooking throughout the lounge and downstairs corridor areas. Being given a glass of wine that was not ordered and being charged for it. My fuakt I should have asked the question.

    "It was ok, although for the money you would probably be expecting better in terms of genral appearance and size of room, however the breakfast was good and the bar meals were hearty and for a fair price too. Its not a fantastic hotel but I wouldnt say dont go there, give it a try and see for yourself." (99688893)

    It was very central, in close proximity to the shopping area. The staff were attentive at all times.

    The downstairs lounge area was predominantly occupied by non guests throughout the day and in the height of season it would be worse, also it should be a no smoking area in my view.

    "I enjoyed my stay even though it was business, the hotel was close to local amenities and train station. The room was very well presented. I dont think I would eat in the restaurant again as the meat was burnt and the veg was under cooked, however the meal I had from the bar on the previous night was really nice.     the bed was very comfortable, the room and in particular the bathroom was very clean . the room was a bit noisy;being over the carppark of the hotel.

    the toilet flush did not work well at all and was not consistent; the TV was very small for a twin room.

    "the check in was plesant, as were all the staff. i found the room small, grubby it was clean but just so old that the dirt wont go away any more. I found the place charming but the fact that the stair case going to the second floor is subsididng and at a slant and the carpet is thread baring made me feel a bit un easy.     Standard room small but clean including modern fitted bathroom. Good sized TV. Comfortable relaxing lounge. Accessibility to town centre.

    Nothing specific. Only slight issue is that car park tends to get crowded.

    "I did not find the hotel very friendly. it seems to be the centre of local life and I felt that I was a nuisance staying there. Having said that, I did not come across many staff. When I went down for breakfast there were no staff in the dining room. After standing around for a few minutes feeling an idiot I gave up and went out instead. I spent some time in the bar but felt unwelcome. I like to drink at the bar. There was barely room to do so, no bar stools and waiters squeezing past all the time to sell food. They ought to have advertised it as a rewtaurant not a bar. I had to go into town to watch the Middlesborough football game (the TV in my room did not get Channel 5) yet the following night they had rugby on TV in the bar; I assume the staff like rugby so don't show football."     It was in the middle of town.

    There was no indication on the website that to get back to the railway station one had to climb a steep hill. I would have stayed near the railway station had I known that.

    The age of the hotel was great It felt like a real piece of history. & the staff were very friendly.

    "I have stayed in Penrith at least 4 times a year for the past 35 years. My usual accommodation was full and could not take me so I went to the George. The professionalism and attention of the General Manager, the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff and the service, the character of the Hotel and the standard of the food was of such that I will be back to the George.     Exceptionally clean...Staff were interested in their jobs and excellent at them. General Manager was very much on the ball and an excellent host with time and a word for every guest went out of this way to ensure that we had a very comfortable stay.I travel around the world each year and for an old character hotel and service this was on par with some of the best international hotels I have stayed in

    It is a pity that a lift could not be provided in this hotel to access the 4th floor. Have the engineers considered an out side lift at the rear of the building?
