    Friendly, helpful staff. Plenty of seating out of doors. Excellent breakfast. All the facilities one could wish for in the room.

    Staff slow to remove used coffee cups, beer mugs, etc. from outdoor tables, and to keep the area tidy. I found my bill confusing - it didn't seem to follow in chronological order, and I belatedly found that I had been charged twice for the Daily Mail on Monday 16th September.

    A lovely hotel, excellent facilities, good breakfast and a very well appointed clean room with free wi-fi, BUT .........

    The room ( Room 3 ) was next to the plant room which had a faulty pump - it started to make a noise at 10:45 pm and stopped every 40 minutes only to start again a few moments later with a noise which sounded like an electric drill next to the headboard. Despite complaining 3 times during the night, nothing was done about it ... it needed the maintenance man, I wasn't offered an alternative room or any reduction in the amount paid for the room despite not having had any sleep - a very poor response in my opinion, made worse by the fact that at checkout the night receptionist had clearly not left any information for the day shift about the problem.

    Nice rooms

    Breakfast was very dissapointing. We stayed with you 3 years ago with our family and our kids loved the breakfast and were looking forward to the same..but a buffet and no choice was very dissapointing...whatever happened to a good English breakfast? not impressed...in fact day two we skipped the breakfast and went elsewhere....this needs to be changed....a choice of some fresh cooked entre such as eggs, kippers, blood pooding or sausages would be nice an the rest on a buffet...but rubber eggs and aweful food just put our entire family off...my sons said I am "sad" and going back to the room...breakfast was not what I remembered....

    Staff were very friendly an efficient, particularly Kevin who was extremely helpful.

    The room was uncomfortable due to the lack of air conditioning even with the windows open. It would have been nice to have a choice of room when booking on the internet, I was only offered the option of a double room which appeared to be standard.

    "Great location, 5 mins walk to local pubs & restaurants. If staying in Harpenden, I'd recommend Stazio for a great italian restaurant. We didn't try the hotel food so can't comment on this." (108615720)

    Comfortable clean rooms; very quiet.

    Asked for twin rooms during booking though they had been made up as double. These were converted immediately on request.

    we had breakfast in our room, but the food that arrived was not what we ordered. There was no butter for the toast - we rang reception to ask for some but none arrived

    Basically clean, nice setting.

    Inefficient reception, no lift, no offer of help with bags, inadequate signage to help find room. Cramped for even a single room. Shower did not work properly. Very poor standard of food for room service - food not cooked properly

    . Very friendly and welcoming staff . Dinners and breakfasts - all good

    Only a comment about the online booking system. I was asked for credit payment for the whole amount, but don't remember reading that it was only for credit authorisation; the money was not actually being debited from our account. I had assumed we had paid upfront, so had not budgeted for paying when we were there. Maybe this information could be made clearer.

    "It was our wedding anniversery on Friday 29th February,we wanted to have a overnight stay to celebrate as it only comes around every 4 years.We booked in at reception i was told that our room was at the back of the hotel.We walked up to the back of the hotel where we found a load of work men working on the building we were staying in.We couldnt get through the front door so had to use the side entrance.I couldnt park my car near our room as the car park had vans and skips taken up spaces.We could hear building activity outside our room so we decided to go out for the afternoon.When we went to leave in the morning again we could hear noise outside the room,all the way along the coridor were emergency lights set up and leads all over the floor.For us this was a massive dissapointment.We expected to stay in a quality hotel not a building site.We would expect some kind of response to this very dissapointing stay.     Location. Ground floor room, ideal for my temporarily handicaped wife. Excellent service at all meals taken at hotel.prompt reallocation of room when it was made clear that,in the absense of an elevator,my wife was unable to climb the stairs to the original room

    We were unfortunate enough to be close to a function room which accomodated a wedding party on Saturday July 21. The noise was excessive particularly when it continued until after 1.00 AM on July 22.When i tried to reach the night staff to request that the noise be toned down there was no response!

    I liked the fact that the hotel rooms were in outside buildings so it felt you had ur own place,your own retreat for the weekend. The service was wonderful any problems or needs were catered for immediately

    The only point i would make is that i think is is time for the carpets to be chaged in the communal area of the blocks of rooms. they did look grubby and left a horse smell. It didnt affect our stay in any way, i just felt it let the hotels image down in quite a big way and i commented to my partner each time we stepped out the room. It was a shame because the rooms were lovely! I would also have liked the ironing board to be in a cupboard instead of in the corner of the room but that may be personal preference.

    "The main hotel building is looking good and the rooms are well equiped. Reception staff helpful and efficient. Car parking spaces at reception level lacking especially when the hotel is hosting a function - a wedding on the day of our stay. If parking in the 'upper' car park leave luggage in the car and walk back to reception to check in as you will probably be directed back up the 'hill' to a room in one of the annex buildings. Railway line runs close to some of the annex rooms but sound proofing is good." (99823220)

    Main building refurbishment looks very good. Our stay was simply a room only 'overnighter' following a function elsewhere in the town so we did not see / use other areas / facilities.

    Over night power failure / lighting failure meant no lights at all in the room but especially in the bathroom and in the corridor.We reported the problem at check-out - Hotel did mot appear aware of the situation.

    "Short stay pretty good overall- Breakfast food excellent.... apart from the ghastly mugs (where does one put spoon after stirring tea - this may account for stains on the table cloth.) Hate the tea dispenser. Was also disappointed that your bar could not supply a glass or even a half bottle of champagne. We were looking forward to a glass of bubbly before our later engagement in Harpenden but not to the extent of buying and drinking a whole bottle." (99268282)

    friendliness and helpful attitude of staff

    cleanliness of room left a lot to be desired,in particular the bath and shower fitting showed hard water staining which takes months to build up and had clearly not been polished for at least that time we recieved a discount so tha management obviously agreed.

    Proximity to the centre of town & associated car parking. The front of the hotel/the main house looks beautiful.

    Shower was not very hot; bedroom/bathroom was not very clean (dirty coffee cups, only one plastic cup in the bathroom; hair in a drawer; tissue box was only 1/3rd full; bathroom bin had not been emptied)

    "The hotel was very busy the one night that we stayed - The car park was full. The staff were helpful, friendly and efficient. Our room was fine (apart from a loose tile) and it seemed, well soundproofed. Breakfast was busy but well organised. Overall, a pleasant stay." (99069780)

    Spacious, decor, furniture. It looked fresh and clean.

    There was a loose tile on the floor in the bathroom. It looked like it had previously been fixed. A proper job needs to be done.
