    Fantastic location and a lovely hotel. Amazing food. We had the Taster menu with wine and whilst the portions were very much on the small side, the dishes were superb. The staff in the restaurant and the barmen were very helpful and polite, particularly the breakfast staff. The receptionist who checked us in was also very nice and attentive.

    Disappointingly, the receptionist who was on duty on the Monday afternoon was not so helpful. Asking if she could get someone to come and serve at the bar, I was made to feel like I was interupting her. When after 20 minutes with no service I had to ask again, she was rather abrupt. I also overheard someone else complaining to her later that she hadn't passed on a request for coffee so I know it wasn't just me.

    Very pleasant hotel in a lovely area of Yorkshire.The food was excellent and beautifully served.

    We were very perturbed to find that the hotel had no record of our booking. Fortunately we had the confirmation with us. However, had the hotel been fully booked what would have been the consequence? It does not inspire much faith in the booking system.Moreover, we were put into a room at the far end of the hotel where there was no central heating. We had a portable heater but this is not what we expected from a four star hotel.

    Large room, luxury bathroom, room service

    Considering it was the weekend of the Farmyard Party I thought it was ridiculous that there were no leathers allowed, no bikers - it was the busiest weekend Helmsley has.

    "A pleasant and convenient hotel in a lovely part of the world. Lots to do right on the doorstep.The hotel had not been notified of our online booking but nevertheless we were efficiently checked in to our room within a very short period.If cleanliness and food were improved it would be an excellent hotel. As it is, and with no leisure facilities, I feel it does not give good value for money." (97517511)

    Central location, handy for shops and restaurants. Pleasant room, overlooking lovely garden.

    Not spotlessly clean. Floors particularly unsatisfactory - confetti, hairs and such from previous guests. Breakfast was adequate but a little unexciting and basic.

    "Plenty of parking to the rear and staff more than helpful in answering questions. Situated in centre of the town overlooking the market place that sets up early. Plenty of hot water for decent showers and baths with clean surroundings. As in all hotels, never enough of those small milk cartons for tea and coffee but fresh available on asking. Pleasantly surprised to see curtains drawn and bed turned down on returning late at night. (Would not have left it in such a mess with clothing etc, if known) Despite best efforts of the staff, taxi's are in short supply and cannot be replied upon if eating out of town midweek. Overall impression was I liked the place. A lot!" (99394513)

    Relaxed pleasant surroundings with old world charm. Civilised but far from stuffy with some nice personal touches in the room.

    Very clean,old style country hotel.Staff were very keen and friendly, always used our name when addressing us.Location.Restuarant evening meal was first class in a very nice atmosphere.

    Nothing really, the waitresses little hats were a bit over the top.

    "This is a very olde worlde type of establishment with a modern annex built on. We were able to have a look at the newer rooms and all were of the same high standard, although if it is the view you are looking for then I would recommend you request a room in the older part of the hotel overlooking the front. It can get a bit busy in the square with visitors to the town and market day is always on a friday. It is located next door to a church and you will definitely hear the bells, which we quite liked but others might prefer overlooking the garden which is more peaceful. Lots of good pub grub in the square and one italian restaurant which you would have to book in advance but the food at The Black Swan is superb. There are lots of great sightseeing places nearby and Helmsley is walking distance to the ruins of the castle and if you are up to it a 2 mile walk to Riveaux abbey which should not be missed. Great place to go to and we shall undoubtedly return." (99230686)

    The feature room overlooking the market square was just delightful. The staff very friendly and helpful. The chambermaids kept the room spotless.

    Character of room

    Cold at night as heating is turned off cenrally and our room had three outside walls. Dinner was expensive for what it was.

    "Breakfast was a disaster. Waited 30 mins for coffe toast. four of us - only two of the orders were correct. Toast was only done on one side. Had to ask continously for more butter - eventually took some from table adjacent when others left!!!!! Is there a butter ration. Arrived from holiday abroad had travelled from Liverpool airport at 2.15pm told 'sorry kitchen is closed' even although we had only asked for soup and sandwiches. eventually got afternoon tea. This is unacceptable for residents in a hotel. I can understand if we were asking for a sit down meal but not to have snacks available for residents is not good enough." (3305008061)

    The accommodation was very comfortable and clean the bedroom had everything needed

    Would have liked a room overlooking the garden as requested, rather than by the road going down the side of the hotel

Little details made a difference, home baked fresh biscuits left every day and fresh milk for your coffee brought to your door. Very polite,friendly and helpful staff.     "Overall the hotel provided us with a good base for a mini break. We did not eat in the hotel and did find the local eating options in Helmsley a little limited. It was however a good base for seeing local historic houses. No complaints re the room or the service." (3304150043)

    Room very niceley decorated and furnished. Spacious and well equipped.

    Restaurant appeared a little formal for our tastes, requiring men to wear jackets if dining at weekend.

    "I had been working in Leeds and my wife joined me on the way to a family weekend in Scarborough. This was exactly what we were looking for - somewhere to park the car and relax.     "The room was good but I would have expected a larger television and a mini bar for the cost of the room. After dining in for the first night of our stay we chose to dine out due to the poor quality of the food which was extremely overpriced. When one has been walking on the moors all day a meal which included one small potato is hardly sufficient. Had I known I would have booked elsewhere and feel that this is not a suitable hotel for people taking vigorous exercise and it would be helpfull if this was identified on the website" (3304338799)
