    "Would deffo stay again cos we love the place - hopefully the restaurant was just having a bad night!!!" (108465066)

    Hotel is fabulous, booking was really easy even when i wanted to change my reservation. Everywhere is so clean and well maintaned.

    Plug and taps were broken in bath, trying to ring housekeeping or one of the restaurants is pointless because they don't answer the phone!! Was very impressed with decor of new restaurant but disapointed in meal we thought it was only average!!!

    Lovely leisure facilities, clean room with a good bed, friendly bar staff, nice breakfast.

    It is advertised to look likea luxurious stately home, but is actually a fairly hideous genereic modern building. I also hadn't picked up it was a goldf club from the website. The reception staff were a bit grumpy and the lights in the bathroom were really dim.

    "I have been promised a letter in the near future, inviting us to visit Slaley Hall again and spend the night free of charge, whereupon I will be in a better position to complete the survey questions." (107357637)

    The people in reception were very welcoming and apologetic. Unfortunately, however, we were unable to spend the night at Slaley Hall because the room we had booked through your website was found that morning to be unoccupiable owing to a water overflow.

    The nearby Derwent Manor hotel, in which the folk at Slaley Hall arranged for us to stay the night instead, was not one I would have chosen for myself, and one non-smoking bedroom that had very recently been smoked in. But in life, as with the hotel's mock Tudor beams, you have to take the rough with the smooth.

    Beautiful location and the building is well maintained with excellent facilities.

    Some sloppy service. Car was not parked as promised and newspaper ordered the night before was not delivered.

    Hotel very pleasant and the ground are excellent

    Had to wait ages for food and then they served it with part of the order which was eaten by the time the next part arrived. The mini bar was ripped out of the wall in the room

    The staff are very professional in their dealings, which was helpful in view of my on-line booking not being recorded in their system.

    There was no record of my on-line booking, and in view of how busy the hotel was I was very lucky to then be able to get a room. The hotel images on the website show a beautiful old hall - the actual hotel is a modern block building with a small section being the old hall and it does not reflect the web images which was extremely disappointing. I felt misled and will not stay there again - I actually went out of the way from where I needed to be in order to stay at this hotel because the photographs on-line made it look spectacular. In fact it will make me question any De Vere hotels in terms of the accuracy of the images on the web versus what you actually find.

    Very good value for money on the nights we stayed

    We stayed 2 separate nights,staying elsewhere in between. Both times check in was pathetically slow - blamed by staff on the "system". Isolated - felt obliged to eat at hotel otherwise long treck to village. Cocktail bar staff don't know how to make coffee and one served a Remy Martin in a whisky glass - wine at bar VERY expensive -

    The surroundings were well laid out and it was easy to take walks, etc.

    The first room we were given had not been made up and we had to change to another. The shower was more than complicated and there was very little information in the room about the hotel facilities. Also there was ongoing work in the hotel and no reduction in rate to compensate for this.

    "We had intended to use he hotel main restaurant for most evening meals burt on the first evening we were disapointed to see men drinking beer from bottles whilst dining. This we felt lowered the tone. We were also surprised that the menu only changed monthly and as only 4 main courses were meat courses it did not suit our tastes.     "The hotel is situated in a very beautiful setting; the staff were very friendly and, without exception, made effortless conversation with us. Even though we stayed only one night, we had a very comfortable and relaxed stay. Definitely worth a longer visit next time." (99437202)

    We were very impressed overall with the friendliness of the staff. Very much enjoyed our evening meal in the restaurant and relaxing in the bar area after dinner. We had a very nice, spacious room.

    There were only 2 staff on check-in when we arrived, and they were dealing with less than straight-forward arrivals, which meant that we were kept waiting longer than acceptable before we could be checked in. Not good when you have been travelling for several hours.

    Booked a room in main hotel as long ago as June 2006 only to find we were in a lodge and had to drive for evening meal. Would have preferred a room in hotel. There were no coffee /tea makinh facilities - when ordered took too long to arrive. We were leaving for evening meal and had wanted a drink earlier. Room in hotel would have had these facilities.

    Friendly attentive staff. Very comfortable bed. Good aircon.

    Food was fairly average. Buffet style breakfast rather than being cooked to order.

    "we had treatments with the beauty therapist which were excellent, we ordered room service which came on time and tasted great, big portions, and we used the leisure facilities which weren't too busy and really comfortable and warm. The only problem we encountered was on checking out, they tried to charge us too much for the room as we had got a special room rate from active hotels and they hadn't taken that into account and also we were charged 3 times for the room service. so my advice would be to check your bill before you pay! But they were very polite and we had no problems after we explained the problem." (3305280800)

    "We would not have expected to have to queue for dinner at the main restaurant- despite having pre-booked our table on both nights of our stay. It would have been good to have the Clubhouse bar available for dinner on the Sunday as the only available option was the main restaurant. On receiving our bill prior to check-out, we discovered that we had been charged for an additional dinner for two plus drinks. When we reported the error on the bill, the member of staff who checked us out seemed to have a problem trying to rectify this despite having a receipt which had not been signed by us. We were very surprised to receive no apology for the mix up which was out of our control. This was a shame as it is this particular memory that has stayed with us, rather than the rest of the stay where the staff were friendly and helpful." (99354581)

    The hotel was in a lovely setting, and it was a good place to get away from it all. It was great to have a pool and spa.

    For the rate paid, and the number of stars this hotel has, we would have expected the restaurant and rooms to have been of a higher quality.

    The room was fine, lovely wide bed - very comfortable. The room was reasonable value for money, well decorated but without any little extras or special touches

    The bathroon was rather spartan The hotel is trying to cater for too may needs - couples, families, golfers. corporate and therfore loses some of the special or personal touches

    "Nothing comes to mind that I would have liked to have known prior to arriving at the hotel, however at check-in the staff person was not very informative re: breakfast hours, and other benefits of the hotel. Luckily we agreed to have someone help w/ bags and that employee was very informative of the hotel and the functions of the room itself. There was also a concierge who was very knowledgable of the area and was a tremendous help with directions. He provided us with maps which he created and/or was willing to draw directions for us.     "Understanding that it was Wintertime, the only place to eat was the restaurant. as the hotel is so far from any town, the residents are almost captive. the clubhouse closed at 17:00 and the restaurant opened at 19:00. although the meals were good, they were not what we wanted and they were expensive. we would have prefered a bar / snack type meal.     "We were there for only one night but were impressed with the hotel in general and were very pleased to find that a broken shower fitting in the bathroom was fixed immediately, even though it was in the evening when one might have expected there to be no-one available for that sort of job."     "Early in the morning there was a fire alarm which turned out to be a false alarm. During this incident there was no communications from the staff as to what was happening. The was no form of apology either immediately after the alarm or the folowing morning. The management of the hotel seem to completely ignore the inconvenience to the guests and the fact that they had a disturbed night due to faulty equipment." (2665629)

    The staff were not freindly and showed an attitude that this was just another job.
