    "It was a lovely hotel with pleasant, friendly staff although when we arrived, we never managed to get a drink with our sandwiches because there was no barman and no one around to ask. I am not sure why. " (108780074)

    There was far more good than bad - the room was clean, spacious and very comfortable.

    The one area that determines whether I would go back to a hotel or not is the toilet facilities! You failed my immediate test I am afraid although I would not completely rule you out. The toilet paper was difficult to say the least to get out of the container. It was impossible to tell how much you might need and then the flush did not work with enough power to push the paper down the exit pipe. Consequently, there was always paper in the bowl... :-(

    Lovely setting, interesting rooms, pleasant breakfast, pleasant staff.

    Room not ready at 2pm. No soap, kettle deep brown inside, mugs likewise, main room light not working when we arrived in the dark. At breakfast good food but 4 couples who arrived later were served first and the waitress had to take our order twice as she lost it! The manager promised to ring us to disuss this but didn't.

    Frendliness of staff

    IT WOULD APPEAR THAT 2/3 PEOPLE WERE HAVING TO RUN ALL SIDES OF THE HOTEL SO SERVICE WAS POOR. THE MAIN COURSES IN THE RESTURANT WERE TOUGH AND TASTELESS,AND TOOK ALONG TIME TO ARRIVE.

    the food is excellent and we can't fault the convenience of the location for attending a wedding at Clearwell Castle

    the room was covered in dog hair which concerns me, especially because we have 2 young children under the age of 4. We'd hope that some of the £130 we paid for the room might be spent on cleaning it for the next occupants

    Excellent well cooked and well presented food, including breakfast.

    Insufficient staff at the time to cover all areas of the hotel, this therefore caused us quite a long wait at times. e.g. at the bar or at the reception desk.

    The staff and the bar area is very good and we had a nice meal the night we stayed.

    We were staying in the annex and the rooms are very old looking and not very clean, the tube in the tv in one of our rooms was falling out which is not very good as we had a young child in this room, the drawer that had the tea making products in was very dirty. When we had breakfast the toast had meldew on it.

    Lovely location, very attentive staff despite ice rink, which could not be helped!

    Minor gripe was that they forgot to tll me no food on Sunday night, but I sorted myself out.

    "The place was not cheap, so we expected a clean room at the very least. It was the beginning of December, so we thought they may have checked things like the radiators and towel rail would be switched on. The radiator did not emit a lot of heat, even when we did turn it on. These drawbacks were a real shame, because the place could be really good if they got a few simple things right. The staff though (particularly the barman/receptionish/waiter) were excellent. The location is great and the food was very good. But I don't think we'd be tempted to stay there again (though we might visit the bar and restaurant)." (107633219)

    The staff were friendly and attentive. The food was very good. Nice location in a small village, next to a castle (Clearwell Castle).

    The room was cold, for the first day/night the heated towel rail did not work (until we mentioned it to a member of staff). The cleanliness of the room left a lot to be desired (dusty, bed cover rather grubby, etc.)

    Lovely room (four poster bed - very comfortable) - nice area, great food, good service, wonderful atmosphere in the bar with a lovely log fire!

    Was a bit pricey and there's only really one guy on staff during the day so the desk wasn't manned but we were never left waiting more than a minute or two!

    Room was spacious and the staff were very friendly

    The room had not been thoroughly cleaned - there was a significant amount of dust in the light fittings, on the extractor fan, the shower rail and the radiator - this had obviously buitlt up over a long period of time. There was also a dead spider and old cobweb hanging just by our table in the breakfast room.

    The room had two single beds but they were totally differnet so there was no option to put together. THere human waste on the wall next to the toilet. The towels were not clean and i suspect the room had not been made up.

    Breakfast was superb - especially the bacon, which was juicy and thicker than a cheap pub gammon steak. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel has lots of period features and interesting nooks and crannies, set in an incredibly peaceful village location in the Forest of Dean.

    My only criticism, and it had no effect on my enjoyment of the stay, was that perhaps the room I had was a little dated in its decor, though not tired. I was very happy, though perhaps others may be less easy to please.

    the bar man was great and he was in reception it was his last day there shame to loss him ,manager was very stressed and it came over to the guest

    "I have stayed here before (about 4 months before this visit) during the week on business. The room was very good, the food very good and the breakfast exqusite. I therefore recommended to my wife that we should return as a couple. Unfortunately the cost for the Saturday night and the overall experience did not match my first visit. The food was very good but a little overpriced and the breakfast good but not as good. Shame, but I'll probably come again on business." (97520567)

    Good location and good food.

    Accommodation was fair but there was a layer of dust on the canopy of our four poster. There was an unhealthy smell downstairs in the bar area. We were unable to get a sandwich on the Saturday afternoon.

The room was clean tidy and had a friendly feel, although the television was big and old and took up too much surface space.     There is not a lot else around. So if you do not want to drive in the evenings, you are stuck there.

    "The location was fabulous we were attending a wedding at the Castle and we were literally stumbling distance from the venue, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms were a good size, clean and tidy, however the bathroom felt a litlle dated and dim.     interesting building.Comfortable well appointed room. Good Food

    Room had not been serviced when we arrived and was then hastily prepared by a quick change of bed linen and towels. No other cleaning 'between lets' took place which made me feel uncomfortable about hygiene standards. Significant damp problem in the room stemming from external brickwork in need of repointing.
