    "If you want to stay the night and not eat, this is a fantastic place, and I'd recommend it. But the food and service are bad. Don't go here for a special occasion. What a shame, this place has such potential." (108604160)

    The Manor and its grounds are beautiful. The room was really nice, clean, spacious, so definitely good value.

    The service in the restaurant was really bad. The food is so expensive, that one would expect better service. When we ordered our food in the bar, we were not helped carry our drinks through to the restaurant. The service was very casually and quite cheeky in the restaurant. The main course was cold. We told the waitress this, who told us she would tell the chef, but we heard nothing after that, no apology, reduction etc.

    Freindly, helpful staff. Quickly changed our room when asked as the first room in the couryard rooms was cold (we were travelling with a small puppy and guests with pets are allocated these rooms for easy access) Very comfortable bed and also nice and clean. Food in the restaurant was well cooked and enjoyable. Swimming pool temperature nice and warm.

    None that mattered - could possibly do with a bit of updating in places. Changing rooms etc in the swimming pool could do with a bit of TLC.

    "We stayed on business and we picked it becuase we are sick of those anonymous boxes which all look the same and where you could be anywhere. In this hotel we found warmth, individuality, attention to detail and good customer service. I would definately recommend. " (107835055)

    Fantastic room, very warm and clean. Excellent bathroom and shower leisure area warm and good facilities Good breakfast

    A bit noisy from the floorboards from the room above.

    Decor was very nice, food was good especially breakfast

    bed was rather soft, stairs were very rickety - difficult to walk down without feeling like I was going to fall down especially when carrying my suitcase

    Food was excellent, service was good, the bar-lounge was beautiful

    Bedroom was over the boiler room and the hum from the boiler was loud, especially when trying to sleep. Staff smoked cigarettes outside our room window and therefore the smoke came in.

    The night porter (Steve) was excellent. The breakfast was very nice.

    Some of the staff seemed less than organised and often the performance levels appeared hit and miss.

    Beautiful building. Two restaurants. Good choice of food and price. Good pint of beer in Stable Bar.

    Nothing really but because I would say that their maintenance man could do a lot worse than working through all the small details to keep it up to scratch. Door sticking, tap dripping, etc

    Friendly staff, good food, comfortable hotel.

    Room had character but was up in the attic with limited circulation space and difficult to move around because of low /sloping ceilings and beams.would have been better suited to a smaller person rather than a 6ft man.Also TV had very poor reception.

    "Accommodation was fine,but the level of service was quite poor. We went into the bar area the first evening to order some bar food and were told that it may not be possible as there was a large group in the dining room and they would have to check with the chef first.We were accommodated but felt like we were not being treated like paying guests and residents.We ordered a bottle of wine and asked for an ice bucket,but were told that there was no ice in the hotel!"     "A very pleasant stay just wish we had had more time to linger in the peaceful grounds but I will certainly return in the future. I did not sample the health club ( not sure if I am that inclined to use the facilities as I'd rather just relax, but spoke to people who did use them and they said they were very good) The gardens were very pleasant lots of ouside seating areas, Teesdale is a very pretty area of the North East and well worth exploring."     The room was comfortable and cosy, beds were very comfortable and pillows were the best I have had in most hotels. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was freshly cooked and very tasty.

    Our only complaint was that the breakfast room was not sign posted or easy to find, though when I asked a member of staff for directions she escorted me there and said she would mention the lack of signage to the management.

    "We stayed in the courtyard extension, the room was a good size and reasonably furnished, the bed comfortable and the bathroom had been recently well refurbished. However, the room was almost shaken to bits by people constantly coming in and out through the external door which slammed closed (but not locked) and shook the whole place. This was accompanied by screaming children running riot outside the bedroom window in the courtyard below. We had planned to have a nap after out journey but found it impossible. Room service delivered meals which were good and promtly delivered, however the trays with food remnants on placed in the corridor for collection were still there 14 hours later." (97532452)

    "I was disgusted that on Easter Sunday the kitchen had apparently sold out of so much that it could not offer the Brasserie or A La Carte menu & the fish & chips i finally got was of very low standard. I suspect something happened that weekend at the hotel and no one gave us the full facts ..." (97450926)

    "The hotel had character to it (being several hundered years old).The staff were friendly and accommodating.The restaurant we found was rather overpriced and the waitresses a little inexperienced (had to remind them that a roll should have been served with my soup, a steak knife with my steak and the sauce that I had ordered with my steak which was still in the kitchen when my steak was served). However, for two other nights we ate in the adjoining brasserie where the ambience was much more informal, candlelit and the prices much more competitive for the excellent food that was on offer. The health spa- gym, pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room were well equipped although use in the evening was rather crowded whereas the best time to workout and swim etc was early morning (prior to breakfast) where it was deserted."     We were given a free upgrade to the Prince Bishop (bridal suite)as there had been a misunderstanding over the dates of our stay. This suite was luxurious and extremely comfortable.

    Although the health spa was well eqipped it was starting to look a bit tired and in need of a refurbishment which I understand is due later this year.

    Good car-parking; interesting historical references; excellent Breakfast; clean bathroom; excellent staff

    Dusty ledges in cupboards; hopeless pillows (4 available but each one hard and thick!); NO TV available (no emergency cover for blown-down aerial ?) It was VERY IMPORTANT to us to be able to see both football cup matches and Australian tennis women's final We were so verydisappointed

    We were given a ground floor room which was great for us with a baby and all the stuff we had with us.

    Excellent room and very comfortable and homely. We enjoyed our stay with you even if only for one night.

    Having to carry my luggage up many flights of stairs which was a bit of a trial for a not so young chap not that easy. But did cope.

    "Lovely building seemed that staff were a bit short on the ground, took a while for someone to check us in. Restaurant stopped serving food at 9.15 but room service was advertised until 10pm when we tried to order room service at 9.40pm we were told the kitchen was shut down and the chef had gone, all they could offer us was cold sandwiches which is not acceptable after a six hour drive to get there. We would like to have been informed of the renovation works on the bedrooms an I think it is unacceptable that they were working at 7.30am on a Saturday morning right above our room. They could do so much better with this hotel." (3305425795)

    "Could have done with a bit more info on checking in e.g. how to lock the door, where the health club was and how we could access it as residents. The staff were very polite and efficient in the restaurant.Found the wine substantially more expensive in the bar than in other local bars although beer and spirits were comparable. The hotel has a quaint shabby chic in keeping with its age but our room was a good size, lovely and warm and together with its solid wood furnishings it made a refreshing change from some of the artificial, postage stamp size rooms of so many modern hotels. The location was quite central for visiting a number of attractions and for visiting Durham and Newcastle. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would return or recommend the hotel to others."     The room was a good size with nice quality furnishings. Lovely 4 poster bed gave character to the room. Quaint, immaculately clean bathroom arrangement down a set of stairs.

    Shower was a bit weak but given the age of the building this was not unexpected. Found it impossible to access ITV and Channel 4 and despite asking twice this was not rectified.

    Loved the massive room, four poster bed, huge clean bathroom. Also liked the oldy worldy feel to the hotel with the wooden panels, portraits and suit of armour on the stairs. Also liked the laid back attitude in the late night bar and the breakfast was pretty good too.

    Couldn't get more than a dribble out of the shower.

    The history of the building and the stylish setting made it feel like a special event rather than an overnight stop over. Although there wasn't any hot water in our room in the morning, the staff were very helpful and opened one of the suites for us to use.

    It was very clean and the and tidy, quite friendly and the gym was a nice way the unwind and relax.

    The accommodation was adequate for what we needed, but quite small and there was alot of steps, as the room was in the eves of the hotel with no real views out of the windows to speak of. The floor boards creaked and you were not sure if you were safe walking down the corridors, but in a way this added to the hotels charm.
