    An extremely good value for money weekend. The food was excellent overall, we loved our room with beautifual 15th century beams. Very impressed with friendliness of staff and warm friendly-relaxing atmosphere. We would like to have a repeat visit.

    Breakfast was excellent - best bacon I've tasted in a while! Very polite, helpful and amenable staff Car parking & internet access Central position in town centre

    Hot water ran through both taps - Room 23 - couldn't get a drink of water! No fans or air conditioning

    Very friendly hotel, very clean and comfortable. Small enough to be cosy and friendly and atmospheric.

    Value for money as the room was nice

    The staff had apalling customer service including (i think) the male manager. When complaining, the gentleman did not even apologise, let alone offer some recompense. The food/hot drinks we ordered from room service was all cold and took about 20 minutes for coffee and cake

    Polite reception staff who changed our room on arrival as the first room allocated to us smelt badly of cigarette smoke. Also, no problem with our bringing our dogs into the hotel (chargeable). Good breakfast choices.

    Whilst the public areas are in good condition, the hotel rooms are badly in need of redecoration and soundproofing (we barely slept due to traffic noise, car alarms etc). Also, the heating was on full-blast and couldn't be adjusted.

    "Definitely would have felt ripped off if I had paid the £70 on my original web enquiry. Shopped around and got same room for £50 but still dubious value considering issues above. The Castle and Ball, being the biggest hotel in town is trying to be grandiose but does it on the cheap by hiring child waiters and doing shabby maintenance. If you stay here, insist on a room that faces away from the street - there is a lot of noise." (107476209)

    Decaffeinated coffee in room - excellent! Very comfortable bed, clean and pleasant bathroom. Very good chef.

    Restaurant staffed buy daft teenagers who don't understand service and had to fetch 'someone else' to write our order down. Heavy TV fell off its stand - very dangerous. Overhot room, even hours after radiator turned off. Chugging noise all night long heard from bed area - suspect fridges in bar below: most annoying. Lots of vehicle noise from main road. Extremely creaky floor.

    "The location is a real bonus and the taxi driver who was with us for about 2 hours made us feel at home. We booked through Booking.com where the hotel was rated 5-star!" (107761695)

    Needs asked for were met efficiently and without fuss. Location excellent. Good food, good ambience for dining casually.

    State of the property in general. Front desk personnel friendly except the older woman who was cold. Responsive but extremely cold. We were surprised she handed us the keys to the room at all when we checked in.

    "We booked the hotel as a stopover on the way to stay with our son in London. We were invited to join a wine tasting which was very enjoyable. The manager hosted the event and was charming. Despite having the weekend off work, he made a point of saying goodbye to us. This a very special hotel." (107899435)

    The restaurant was very good and value for money. The staff were efficient and friendly.

    Our party booked three rooms. These varied greatly in size (between one double bed and two double beds in one room), all costing the same amount. We experienced some traffic noise at the front of the hotel

    "For the special web price this hotel can't be beat. Our room was large and the decor was excellent. The hotel is also on the main street so food and drink prices were reasonable. We didn't find the traffic noise to be a problem though the room faced the main road." (107185955)

    Excellent personal service from everyone with whom we came into contact at the hotel; the room was spacious and well appointed; the food was good value; parking was easy peasey.

    Room was on the street and so loud on Friday night, but it was such a nice big room that it compensated for this inconvenience.

    "We enjoyed our stay and liked our room above 'the ball', friendly staff at check in and in general good value for money. In general we think the hotel needs some more redecoration and refurbishment, as our room looked a bit tired, to bring it up to 21st century standards.     Traditional old English Inn, good central location close to shops and restaurants lots of character, makes a refreshing change from many chain hotels where you wake up and wonder what town or even country you are staying in. Staff friendly new bathrooms good and showers are reliable good breakfast menu but need to do away with the large tea and coffee dispensers new comfy beds good

    Furniture and curtains in room could do with updating + redecoration needed,e.g. hole in bathroom door Breakfast area needs some redecoration. Need to install new radiators.

    "Adequate parking and very friendly and efficient welcome at reception. Our room was clean and spacious with a very comfortable bed and good bedside lighting. Other furniture old and rather shabby but with good amounts of hanging space and drawers. Bathroom obviously recently refurbished, with a brand new shower which (a) gave only either very hot or too hot water, not cold and (b) was positioned in such a way that it was necessary to stand practically touching the wall to be able to wash under it. Service in the restaurant was friendly and efficient, but the food was very average 'pub grub' and the wine list extremely limited, both in the restaurante and at the bar. Again, friendly and efficient service in the restaurant at breakfast, which was a well cooked and well presented buffet, with a reasonable but not over-generous choice.     Chilly - radiator did not work and the heated towel rail was totally absent! It was late, all I wanted was food and drink but if I had been staying longer than one night I would have expected a room change. Also the shower set up was ergonomically impossible to use without contortions!
