    Friendly staff, good food, welcoming public area

    Only half of a loo roll for a family of four in the room. Kettle in room had flaky bits in it. Plastic cups in room not glass ones.

    Clean friendly quiet

    Accommodation/Decor rather faded and tired Evening meal no better than adequate. Pub food as it used to be 20 years ago.

    "Though this hotel is run by the friendliest staff I have ever met I got the feeling that the Hotel is being run on a very tight budget, as stated previously the stylish room we had booked didn't seem to be that well finished. All in all I'm not convinced that the hotel is worth the £95 we paid. " (108669929)

    Very friendly & helpful staff, nothing was too much trouble. Room was tastefully decorated.Breakfast was excellent.

    We booked the room with the 4 poster bed, unfortunately the bed doesn't seem to have been fully completed and you could see all of the metal brackets where a decent canopy or drape would make it so much better. The dinner was good but not excellent, muscles overcooked and only two potatoes with the Lamb Banquet was a little poor. The rooms are quite noisy and consequently we were woken up very early when we had hoped to have a late start.

    Our third visit to this Hotel - first discovered 24 years ago on our honeymoon. Through different owners it has maintained good quality, despite being in a remote location.

    Pleasant rural location; Inn full of character - oak beams and candles - very atmospheric. Value for money restaurant prices. Newly decorated bedrooms, clean and pleasant. Bathroom fitted to a good specification.

    Couldn't find a hair dryer!

    "Our three night stay was all too short in this beautiful, characterful country inn which is within easy reach of Hadrian's Wall and other historic attractions. Our room was spacious, clean and well presented with free wireless internet and full digital TV services; the wireless internet is available throughout the inn. The restaurant served some of the best food we've had for some time, all very reasonably priced and absolutely delicious. The service was faultless. I would thoroughly recommend to anyone who wants comfort, excellent and friendly service and fantastic food. " (108165083)

    Lovely country inn with very friendly staff and warm welcome. Superb attention to detail in all areas. Excellent restaurant with a short but inspired and exciting menu - also very good value for money.

    the breakfast was great, but we found the dinner portions too big. a plug point near the mirror in the bedroom would have been useful for the hair dryer

    Very friendly, clean and tidy hotel. The food was well priced and very good. The owners and staff were very helpful and couldn't do enough for you.

    The only problems we had during an otherwise very enjoyable stay was that there was only a net curtain in the bathroom that didn't have a frosted glass window and overlooked the main road, plus the construction of the bathroom itself made it difficult to stand up in the bath to take a shower due to a protruding wall that restricted the space.

    We had a lovely time staying at the String of Horses. The room we stayed in was a good size, very clean with an excellent en-suite. The breakfast was the perfect size and made with fresh local ingredients. We had dinner on our second evening and the food was excellent, really very very good. But the thing that really makes this such a nice place to stay is the staff, they are so friendly and made us feel very welcome. The String of Horses is also the perfect staging post for Gretna Green (20 minutes away). We'll be back next year for our anniversary!

    The taps in the bathroom turn the wrong way! (Honestly it just adds to the charm of the place)

    Quaint, old Inn. Nice owners.

    Faugh couldn't be found using our TomTom. But 1 mile away is Heads Nook which is on the TomTom. I would suggest that the driving directions mention Heads Nook to help SatNav users.

    Absolutely fantastic all round - wonderful clean rooms with all ammenities, fabulous olde worlde set out downstairs, bar, restaurant, etc., Wonderful food - tooo good. Friendly helpful staff and wonderful hosts who are running the hotel. Will certainly go back again as soon as we can - such a peaceful restful place.

    The Inn is very relaxing with character decor in line with a 300 year old Inn, also the staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Breakfast wasn't bad.

    Bed wasn't very comfortable.

    Very quiet location. Attentive and pleasant owners and staff. Good restaurant and food. Good value for money.

    Analogue television which didn't have BBC2, Channel 5 or Teletext/Ceefax. Remote control also not working. Only hand held shower. Lack of information about the local area.
