When I expressed my concerns, the manager bent over backwards to help me

When arriving, there is no reception as such - just a note on the door with a telephone number to ring. In fairness, it did not take long for the manager to arrive, but not what is expected of a "high class" hotel as described on your home web page. I quote your web page about your rooms: "with all the usual facilities to be expected in a hotel of this distinction". Although a single traveller, I had a double room. You could not access one side of the bed because of the sloping ceiling. The room was so small that there was no room for a wardrobe. My suits and shirts were hung on the back of the door. A professional colleague was staying in an adjacent room. The height of the door to access the bathroom was about 1.5 metres. Quaint yes, but not ideal when trying to find the loo in the middle of the night! She also found out late in the evening that she had no towels. Thinking it too late at night and too early the next morning to 'phone anyone, she dried herself on her day's clothing. Sitting in the dining room, the only table for two was a gateleg table, when each of us had to sit with legs astride to fit round the table legs.

Overall: In many ways, a lovely building, but not a "high class" hotel as you describe. The manager was very helpful and offered to change my room, but I decided not to bother with one night remaining.  (107805436)

Nice building and location

"Luxury" Room 5 very cramped, smelling of disinfectant. Tiny internal ensuite with no ventilation/extraction, nowhere to put toiletries, only one small ring for towels, poor flow from washbasin taps. No sound insulation from room above (noise throughout night : coughing, snoring, footsteps). Room windows stuck and handles broken. Staff not in building - had to use mobile phone to contact.

Overall: For the price paid, worst hotel ever stayed at.  (107536894)

It was a perfect place - very nice room - nice guy who owned the place. Nice breakfast. And beautifull surroundings.

The B&B had not reserved a room for us. - They did not know that we where comming. So now I am worried that we ahve paid two times. We will make a formel comlaint.

Lovely place adjacent to a golf course and a decent Indian within stumbling distance. Very easy to get to from Motorway - good place to break journey from London heading up North.

Overall: Excellent  (107844104)

room very comfortable well heated and quiet. Hotel lounge and breakfast room with open fire very cosy with a charm and olde world atmosphere.Breakfast full english excellent cooked without grease and well presented.

although not presenting a problem for us on arrival at hotel entrance guests are asked to contact reception by phone. Mature couples may not necessarily have a mobile phone and with no public call box near by - problem

Overall: we could not have wanted better  (107488855)

Why do we publish ratings from Active Hotels?

Our rating system is designed to give you the confidence to find and book the hotel that best suits your needs. We've worked hard to create a fair and impartial process to collect our ratings so you can always be assured of a great hotel experience.

How do I add a rating?

Unlike other sites that offer ratings, our rating process is by invitation only. This ensures that 100% of the ratings you see on our site come from guests that have booked online with us and stayed at the hotel in question.

All our ratings are created by guests who have booked through Active Hotels (or its sister sites) and completed their stay over the last year. We don't edit, alter or adjust the ratings so you can be sure of unbiased opinions.

How do you manage to collect so many ratings?

48 hours after departure from your accommodation booked through Active Hotels or any of our sister sites, you may be invited to complete a guest review questionnaire. This means that, for most hotels, we're able to post more than 1 guest rating every single week. We currently display over 70,000 ratings and we add hundreds of scores from real guests every day.
