4.0 / 5 4.0 / 5 John [Llangammarch Wells, United Kingdom] on 10/08/2004 (Solo leisure traveller)

excellent breakfast, spacious well appointed room,

It's 20 mins walk from town, not the 10 mins advertised; slightly noisy at front overlooking road

Overall: great value; all the important points of a 4 star hotel ata fraction of the price; spacious room ; comfortable bed with good linen, decent shower and bath; excellent breakfast.  (1336918)

Staff very friendly, very comfortable bed, good breakfast

Noisy room, as on the main road side of hotel without double glazing

Overall: very good!  (108571877)

Bar lounge / complimentary canapes. Complimentary drinks in fridge in room. Digital TV. Drinks machine.

1. Perfunctory welcome on arrival by surly receptionist. 2. No fresh milk in fridge as promised by receptionist and as indicated by note placed in room (and no alternative, eg UHT milk). 3. Room on ground floor right next to car park; workmen coming and going noisily, able to see into room so privacy affected. 4. The room was very small and there was only one (hard) chair to sit on, which had to be moved to a position blocking the wardrobe doors in order to watch the television. 5. Bathroom: washbasin at knee height; no hot water from tap and no plug in basin. Had to shave in the shower. Shower constructed at same level as bathroom floor so shower water overflowed onto bathroom floor despite efforts made to keep it in the shower area using bathmat. 6. Breakfast service: we went to the breakfast room at 10.10am, the advertised breakfast service hours being up to 10.30am. Having taken juice and cereals from the self-service counter we ordered our cooked breakfasts including a request from my wife for scrambled egg on toast to accompany her bacon; the waitress indicated that we would have to toast our own bread using a machine provided. The waitress then almost immediately brought the cooked breakfasts while we were still only half way through our cereals; these could not have been cooked to order and had clearly been prepared some time earlier and had sat on a hotplate. Could the waitress not have produced a slice of toast for my wife's egg while my wife finished her cereal? Then, while we were halfway through our cooked breakfasts, a waitress removed the bread, butter and marmalade from the self-service counter without checking whether we had all the toast etc which we required. I had to ask her to bring the bread, butter and marmalade back so that we could do our toast to eat after finishing our cooked breakfasts. Throughout our breakfasts there was a waitress cleaning tables using smelly detergent; she cleaned the table top next to ours while we were eating our cooked breakfasts which did not help our digestion. Also throughout our breakfasts the staff were walking round the breakfast room reporting to the receptionist on which table tops had been stained; again, hardly an aid to our digestion. There were several very young waitresses who seemed uninterested in the hotel guests, and appeared to be counting down the time until they could sit down, as they then did, to eat their own breakfasts. 7. On checking out I was not asked if we had had a pleasant stay or engaged in any conversation at all, the surly receptionist being only interested in taking my money. I had to ask for a copy of the invoice.

Overall: We were extremely disappointed in this hotel, having arrived with high hopes of it following reading the website. The hotel has the potential to be very good but the points made above need attention.  (108381996)

Nice room, good facilities, perfect for the type of stay we needed. Clean, pleasant and stylish. Polite, helpful staff.

Creaky floorboards and shower/bathroom fan a little noisy when you switched the fan on.

Overall: Very good. Perfect for an overstay stay.  (108356326)

Friendly, helpful staff. loved the fridge with complimentary drinks in the room and newspapers in the lounge. Very near the Minster and town centre too.

Perhaps room could have been a litle bit cleaner

Overall: Very good- we'll go back.  (107570930)

Why do we publish ratings from Active Hotels?

Our rating system is designed to give you the confidence to find and book the hotel that best suits your needs. We've worked hard to create a fair and impartial process to collect our ratings so you can always be assured of a great hotel experience.

How do I add a rating?

Unlike other sites that offer ratings, our rating process is by invitation only. This ensures that 100% of the ratings you see on our site come from guests that have booked online with us and stayed at the hotel in question.

All our ratings are created by guests who have booked through Active Hotels (or its sister sites) and completed their stay over the last year. We don't edit, alter or adjust the ratings so you can be sure of unbiased opinions.

How do you manage to collect so many ratings?

48 hours after departure from your accommodation booked through Active Hotels or any of our sister sites, you may be invited to complete a guest review questionnaire. This means that, for most hotels, we're able to post more than 1 guest rating every single week. We currently display over 70,000 ratings and we add hundreds of scores from real guests every day.
