polite staff and great breakfast

Like a maze to get to the rooms

Overall: Good for overnight stay  (108719383)

3.4 / 5 3.4 / 5 david [Rochester, GB] on 08/10/2009 (Mature couple)

Good central location. Excellent english breakfast

Poor soundproofing in room. Staff in pub restaurant surplus to requirements as they dont obtain drinks or take payments and stop serving before 9pm.

Overall: Good basic hotel in a central location  (108968305)

2.3 / 5 2.3 / 5 Nigel [Balsham, GB] on 13/09/2009 (Solo leisure traveller)

Good range of cask beers kept well. Hotel in centre of Holmfirth which is lovely little town with plenty of non-chain shops and interesting ginnels. But lots of hills! Staff friendly and willing to help.

First room offered, cell like with only a roof light for ventilation. Offered a choice of two more - very similar with a window - turned out to be stuffy and noisy. Breakfast big choice but badly cooked - overdone omelette, greasy fried egg. Dinner - huge menu and pictures - food poor. Pasta carbonnara inedible.

Overall: Not a bad place if all you want is a drink, but there are plenty of other good pubs in Holmfirth. It's only graded as two star, so I didn't expect luxury, but I was not expecting to be so glad to leave! Their motto is " where quality and good value meet" - perhaps they did, but they didn't get on!  (108875901)

Why do we publish ratings from Active Hotels?

Our rating system is designed to give you the confidence to find and book the hotel that best suits your needs. We've worked hard to create a fair and impartial process to collect our ratings so you can always be assured of a great hotel experience.

How do I add a rating?

Unlike other sites that offer ratings, our rating process is by invitation only. This ensures that 100% of the ratings you see on our site come from guests that have booked online with us and stayed at the hotel in question.

All our ratings are created by guests who have booked through Active Hotels (or its sister sites) and completed their stay over the last year. We don't edit, alter or adjust the ratings so you can be sure of unbiased opinions.

How do you manage to collect so many ratings?

48 hours after departure from your accommodation booked through Active Hotels or any of our sister sites, you may be invited to complete a guest review questionnaire. This means that, for most hotels, we're able to post more than 1 guest rating every single week. We currently display over 70,000 ratings and we add hundreds of scores from real guests every day.
