Experience of the restaurant, location, service and food was very good. And enjoyed the overall experience.

When booking over the internet, it was not made very clear that the rooms were not above the restaurant but almost half a mile up a side street. The room allocated to us was the 'Mill Pool' and not the 'Greenway','Paradise Point' nor the 'Old Mill Creek' as expected and described on the booking information. We were really dissapointed, especially as it was our Wedding Anniversary. The 'Scottish' checking in clerk reasured us that we would not be disapointed with the room, after we had pointed out to her that the 'Mill Pool' room was not one of those mentioned on the booking form and also, we had paid the higher price for a premier room. When we saw how small the 'Mill Pool' room was there was no one around to ask if we could move rooms. We went back to the restaraunt & saw the same lady again. She sounded symphathetic but clearly was not. On checking out the following day, she apologised, & I said its a bit late now. She replied, saying, "Well you know what room to book next time", which we thought was rude. The 'French', cleaning lady we saw on leaving the rooms was very polite and showed us the other rooms mentioned above, which were available. They were much nicer & bigger. Our room was situated on the second floor with no other escape other than down the same stairway. There was no telephone in the room and you could only open the sash window 150mm. If there was a fire, it would appear we would not have escaped. As the emergency services could not have gained access via the window. If we had been shown to our room, as suggested on the web site, the fire escape procedure should have been pointed out to us.

Overall: Restaurant. Good: Food. Excellent: Accommodation. Clean and tidy but very dissapointing: Location of Restaurant. Good: Location of Rooms. Poor, (not quite the sea view we requested).  (108565071)

good breakfast

despite booking a larger room we were shown into a smaller one because it was double booked!! Then they advertise parking permits would be given to guests. When wearrived there was none because the previou occupant hadnt returned theirs. No alternative arrangements till we insisted and they allowed us to park in the backyard.!!! Took all of 2 hours after a 4 hour drive to sort this out!! Very poor organisation

Overall: Wouldn't stay or recommend the rooms. For the price we paid we didn't get the servic we expected.  (107354150)

The breakfast was really good with a fantastic view over the Dart. The restaurant staff were very good, friendly and helpful. The food was great and to a degree made up for the negative points of the stay. There were some nice touches in the room, such as complimentary wine, water and a jug of fresh milk.

They wouldn't entertain the idea of letting me check in before 2PM. As I had a wedding to go to at 1.30, this was quite inconvenient. Especially as they wouldn't let me leave my bag anywhere and offered me the restaurant toilet to change in. I could understand this if the room was £40, but it was £125! I suppose I should have read the small print better, but its not really a lot to ask is it? The accommodation is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the restaurant which is where you check in. This isn't really made clear. There are no staff members at the accommodation, which is the address given when I booked - you access it with a swipe card. So when I arrived, I had to telephone the restaurant to ask if I could get access. The room I had was reasonably sized and the whole building has been renovated and the intention appears to be for it to have a luxury feel. This is only a surface job though. The furnishings, especially my bed, are quite cheap. Most of the stuff looked like it had come from Matalan. The bathroom was small with a pathetic shower. A small fridge had been plonked on the floor and I ended up turning this off in the night as it was so noisy. The room was boiling and as there is no aircon, I tried to open the window which opens about an inch at the top and bottom. A fan had been installed with a massive industrial looking extension cable dumped on the bedside table.

Overall: Definitely not worth the money. I have stayed in better hotels for one third of the price.  (107701277)

Loved the room, spacious & comfortable, appreciated the complimentary nuts/shortbread (the restaurant should follow this lead)

Disappointed by the dinner at The New Angel, not value for money, staff excellent but food mediocre for the price, no reasonably-priced wine, at this price where is the amuse-bouche ? were there petit-fours ? (can't remember)would not eat at the restaurant again - subsequently ate excellent food on Burgh Island for 2 nights, delicious pre-dinner canapes, sophisticated menu

Overall: Would stay in the rooms again, but would eat elsewhere, which is a shame - breakfast was good though The restaurant appeared not to be full on a Friday night in mid-summer - I suspect I am not alone in my opinions  (107598700)

Beautiful room with high quality fittings and high quality bathroom products. Very comfortable bed. Nice choice of good quality refreshments including fresh milk and nibbles.

The room was very hot even with all the windows open. We didn't want to use the supplied fan as it was covered in dust! The biggest problem with the room is that it doesn't have a dressing table so there is nowhere to sit and do make-up, hair etc.

Why do we publish ratings from Active Hotels?

Our rating system is designed to give you the confidence to find and book the hotel that best suits your needs. We've worked hard to create a fair and impartial process to collect our ratings so you can always be assured of a great hotel experience.

How do I add a rating?

Unlike other sites that offer ratings, our rating process is by invitation only. This ensures that 100% of the ratings you see on our site come from guests that have booked online with us and stayed at the hotel in question.

All our ratings are created by guests who have booked through Active Hotels (or its sister sites) and completed their stay over the last year. We don't edit, alter or adjust the ratings so you can be sure of unbiased opinions.

How do you manage to collect so many ratings?

48 hours after departure from your accommodation booked through Active Hotels or any of our sister sites, you may be invited to complete a guest review questionnaire. This means that, for most hotels, we're able to post more than 1 guest rating every single week. We currently display over 70,000 ratings and we add hundreds of scores from real guests every day.
