Beautiful setting/good breakfast/good service/comfy bed/helpful staff/dining area very spacious and pleasant

Dripping tap in bathroom/sad selection of beverages + milk/T.V.reception and size, poor/weighty bed-counterpane/NO clock-radio!

Overall: Comfortable/clean, fresh linen and towels/clean rooms/helpful and hard-working staff/bar-snacks are hit and miss/rooms could do with a make-over  (107438234)

The bar area had a lovely patio area which caught the evening sun so we could sit outside and admire the beautiful views of the countryside, good food on the Friday night, very peaceful: really felt like we were "getting away from it all".

We ordered a paper for the morning but neither morning did they deliver it to our door (although the hotel welcome pack in the room claimed they would) and on the Sunday morning they didn't even have it at reception. The food was lovely on the Friday night but was not as good on the Saturday night and was quite pricey considering.

Overall: We had a lovely stay and would happily stay again.  (107977816)

Great location, friendly staff.

Overall: After reading previous reviews of the hotel we were pleasantly surprised with the hotel. Although the hotel bedrooms were slightly dated it was clean, tidy and well presented.  (107701644)

3.4 / 5 3.4 / 5 Mark [Portsmouth, GB] on 25/05/2009 (Family with older children)

Fabulous location, ample public areas, warm welcome at reception, most staff very friendly and helpful.

We had booked an executive double room but were given a standard double due to a wedding reception which would disturb the original room chosen. We were told bill was already reduced appropriately and accepted that the move was sesible but the original cost appeared on bill at check out until pointed out by us. A large number of smokers congregated around main entrance of the hotel in the evening. Unwarmed plates for cooked breakfast. Most staff at breakfast extremely attentive but appeared quite inexperienced.

Overall: We enjoyed our stay immensely for the hotel's historic value and as a centre from which to explore the local area. A wedding reception on the evening we visited appeared to overwhelm the resources of the hotel at one point and ours might not have been the most representative of stays. Nevertheless, although the hotel itself is lovely and has immense potential, it appears a little tired and worn (example cracked basin in ensuite). It has the air iof once being a class-leader but, unfortunately, we felt much of the competition has caught up moved ahead.  (107550876)

have waited 15 years to stay in this hotel because of its location, and it was worth the wait.lovely stay fantastic food, lovely restaurant, good comfy bed wonderful views from all aspects of the hotel, happy helpful staff.

reading some other reviews you would think the place is falling down - not the case its a vast hotel and yes is in need of some investment. worn carpets, tatty bathroom, sticking doors to rooms, filthy windows in corridoors (when opened) bar price bit high, bit pricey for the stay we had but as it was a special occasion. a bit tatty in places but we expected that having read some reviews but then some people are hard to please.

Overall: had a lovely stay not cheap but enjoyable and would have no hesitation in staying again and would recommend to anyone.  (107808464)

Why do we publish ratings from Active Hotels?

Our rating system is designed to give you the confidence to find and book the hotel that best suits your needs. We've worked hard to create a fair and impartial process to collect our ratings so you can always be assured of a great hotel experience.

How do I add a rating?

Unlike other sites that offer ratings, our rating process is by invitation only. This ensures that 100% of the ratings you see on our site come from guests that have booked online with us and stayed at the hotel in question.

All our ratings are created by guests who have booked through Active Hotels (or its sister sites) and completed their stay over the last year. We don't edit, alter or adjust the ratings so you can be sure of unbiased opinions.

How do you manage to collect so many ratings?

48 hours after departure from your accommodation booked through Active Hotels or any of our sister sites, you may be invited to complete a guest review questionnaire. This means that, for most hotels, we're able to post more than 1 guest rating every single week. We currently display over 70,000 ratings and we add hundreds of scores from real guests every day.
