Nice room with large balcony and extensive views over Funchal and the sea and port. The English speaking receptionist was knowledgeable and helpful. Other staff's English was limited but they were all pleasant and helpful. Good continental breakfast served in pleasant room.

Steep walk to hotel from the front but that is typical Funchal and is great for working off the meals if you can manage the climb- not for the unfit or anyone with mobility problems unless you are prepared to use the many available taxis to get too and from the centre. If you have a car the entrance is very difficult to negotiate.

Overall: We were well satisfied and thought it good value for money. The location allowed us to get to Funchal centre on foot thereby avoiding the parking problems in the centre. The balcony was great for pre-dinner drinks!  (107298894)

Excellent sea view from our room. Up hill so overlooked town and harbour.

Overall: Lovely views of old town and harbour. steep climb up hill to hotel . Rooms a good size and very clean. Neighbourhood dogs barked at night. Staff very friendly and helpful.  (97965725)

Great value for money. Very friendly and helpful staff who go out of their way to help and an amazing view.

The hill

Overall: This is a lovely and very reasonably priced hotel. The staff are helpful and very friendly. The rooms are spacious and nicely furnished. The highlight is definitly the amazing view over Funchal. The only downside is the very steep hill that the hotel is located on but if you are up for a bit of exercise I would definitly recommend it.  (97338494)

the view over the bay from the room was far better than we expected.

the breakfast was a none event, other than that nothing

Overall: The hotel itself doesn't look very much from the road, but walk round the back and it opens out into a very relaxing, clean, friendly environment. The rooms are basic but comfortable and ultra clean. They are made up each day and towels changed. The service is very friendly, ( even better if you have a go at the language... i failed Miserably ) on arrival don't waste time knocking at the front door walk down the slope at the side and see the attendant in the coffee bar. (cheese and ham toasties make for a nice alternative to the rather plain breakfast). Then courtyard gives the guest a great view out towards the ocean and over the many cruise ships that frequent Funchall, this obviously means one thing, you are located on the hill side, which means a stiff uphill walk to reach the hotel itself. If your active no problems, if your elderly or suffer from mobility problems then possibly not for you without transport, ( there is parking at the hotel round the back most people tend to reverse into the bays from the road) the positive to the uphill hike is that you can eat yourself silly down in the town and by the time you've returned to your room all calories will have been burnt off. However, having said this i would recommend this hotel as good value for money.  (97088679)

Hotel was in a quiet area but still close to the town. Room was clean and refreshed every day. Owners and staff were very helpful at all times.

Limited view from our particular room

Overall: Hotel is on the side of a hill, direct roads are steep but you can find alternative routes to make this easier. Only 20 minutes walk from the centre of Funchal and all amenities. Food and drink were cheaper than expected with plenty of choice but haste is an unknown word in Madeira, so just chill. Taxi fares very reasonable.  (97449760)

Why do we publish ratings from Active Hotels?

Our rating system is designed to give you the confidence to find and book the hotel that best suits your needs. We've worked hard to create a fair and impartial process to collect our ratings so you can always be assured of a great hotel experience.

How do I add a rating?

Unlike other sites that offer ratings, our rating process is by invitation only. This ensures that 100% of the ratings you see on our site come from guests that have booked online with us and stayed at the hotel in question.

All our ratings are created by guests who have booked through Active Hotels (or its sister sites) and completed their stay over the last year. We don't edit, alter or adjust the ratings so you can be sure of unbiased opinions.

How do you manage to collect so many ratings?

48 hours after departure from your accommodation booked through Active Hotels or any of our sister sites, you may be invited to complete a guest review questionnaire. This means that, for most hotels, we're able to post more than 1 guest rating every single week. We currently display over 70,000 ratings and we add hundreds of scores from real guests every day.
