This charming family-run inn has an attractive and tranquil setting in the midst of the rolling Marlborough Downs, with great access to the region’s major road network.
The Inn With The Well gets its name from the original well set in the restaurant floor. Bulletproof glass has been used to provide a safe cover for the well, allowing you to stand on top and look down the 30-metre shaft of this impressive original feature.
Originally established in 1647, this traditional coaching inn is situated on the Ridgeway path, Europe’s oldest highway. Today, the inn still has a convenient location, with good access to the area’s main roads. The inn is just off the A346, only 5 minutes from junction 15 of the M4 motorway.
All of the comfortable, purpose-built, en suite accommodation is housed in a quiet annex, separate from the main inn.

The inn has a cosy bar, as well as the restaurant. As a traditional inn, The Inn With The Well prides itself not only on its food and accommodation, but also on its selection of beers and real ales. 6X (made in nearby Devizes) and guest beers are always poured straight from the barrels stored in the cooled cellar. Guest beers are sourced from local microbreweries or nearby regional brewers. There is also a carefully selected limited wine list, supplemented by 6 to 10 guest wines at any one time. The restaurant’s most striking feature is the 30-metre well, which is covered over with bulletproof glass. Its other charms include traditional, crisp starched linen tablecloths (an all-too-rare sight in restaurants in modern times), as well as paintings of the area by the local artist Earnest Evans, which are available for sale. The restaurant hosts gourmet evenings most months, on Saturday. A large table is set up and everyone takes a place. Food is served and consists of tapas-sized portions of starters and main courses, followed by sweets and coffee. The restaurant is very popular for Sunday lunch and also offers a popular bistro evening on Friday evenings with a fixed-price 3-course menu. The regular menu has evolved over a number of years and is split in to 2 main sections, the bar menu and the main menu. The bar menu offers all the old favourites, including ham, egg & chips, as well as a selection of ploughman's meals and sandwiches. The main menu caters for the more adventurous diner, with a selection of delicious meals. The menus are supplemented by a small selection of specials, which can be found on a board by the entrance to the bar and which change on a regular basis.
By Car (from the M4 motorway): - Leave the M4 motorway at junction 15, following the A346 towards Marlborough. The inn is just off the A346, just 5 minutes from the junction.
